To revise and expand vocabulary in the context wildlife and conservation To reinforce students ability to skim text for overall meaning and scan for detailsTeaching ProceduresSTEP 1 Showing the following pictureShow the following picture to students and get them to talk about it. T: What can you see in the picture?S: Birds, water and land with plants. T: As you see there is water everywhere, and animals can walk in the water, too. It is a wetland. (Teach the word wetland.)T: Why are so many birds here? S: They can swim and find food there. T: Maybe they can stay and hide there, too. Look, these places may be their shelter. (Teach the word shelter.) What birds, do you think, are they? (Seagulls and cranes.)Show a picture of red-crowned cranes. (Teach the phrase red-crowned crane and make sure that they can read it well. Teach the word rare, too.)STEP 2 A picture of the Zhalong Natural ReserveTell the students it is a picture of the Zhalong Natural Reserve in Heilongjiang Province. Show students a map of China and give the students some ideas about where the reserve is. (Teach the word north-east.)STEP 3 Reading the passage silentlyGet the students to read the passage silently and find the answers to the following questions. 1.What and where is Zhalong?2.Why is it a great place for wildlife?3.What animals live in the special place? We live in Zhalong Nature reserve. Zhalong provides us enough food. Its our shelter. Every year many tourists e to see us. We had a happy life there. But three years ago, it changed. There was a big fire in our ideal home, and some of people wanted to change our home into farm. The number of us is getting smaller & smaller. Therere only about 500 in China now. We are rare and endangered animals. We want to have a stay in Zhalong. Please tell the government the importance of protecting wildlife. We want to e back home! Please help us!STEP 7 Homework a.
