At the time, the government was looking for a way to reduce traffic problems in the city of London. The poor areas of the city were so crowded with people that it was almost impossible for horse carriages to get through. The city officials were interested in trying to make it possible for workers to live outside of London and travel easily to work each day. If people had a cheap and convenient way that they could depend on to go to and from work, they would relocate their homes outside of the city. This would help ease the pressure of too many people living in the poor parts of London. From these problems, the idea of the London Underground, the first subway system, was born. The plans for building the Underground met with several problems and delays, but the fast track was finally opened in January 1863. A steam train pulled the cars along the fast underground track which was 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) long. About 30,000 people got on the subway the first day. Riders were treated to fortable seats (standing up while the train was moving was not allowed),and pleasant decorations inside each of the cars. However, the smoke from the engine soon filled the air in the tunnels with ash and soot(煤灰),as well as chemical gases. Fans had to be put in the tunnels later to keep the air clean enough for people to breathe. Even with its problems, riding in the Underground did catch on. It carried 9 million riders in its first year.24. What led the British government to build the London Underground?A. Traffic jams and pollution. B. Population and pollution.C. Overcrowding and traffic jams. D. The poverty and subway problems.25.How did the London Underground solve the smoke problem?A. It made the tunnels larger. B. It put fans in the tunnels.C. It reduced the number of passengers riding in the train.26.The underlined phrase “catch on” most probably means “_”.A. be troublesome B. bee popular and fashionableC. keep up with D. seize27. Which of the following is TRUE?A. To relocate the workers homes outside London, the government built the subway.B. There were so many problems and delays that in 18th century the first subway opened.C. The subway greatly eased the pressure of traffic.D. There were not enough seats for the passengers the first day the subway opened.CDo you always read newspapers over breakfast? If so, unfortunately sometime in the next century, the familiar early-newspaper on the front porch (门廊) will disappear. And instead of reading your newspaper, it will read to you. Youll get up and turn on the puter newspaper just like switching on the TV. An electronic voice will distribute stories about the latest events, guided by a program that selects the type of news you want. Youll even get to choose the kind of voice you want to hear. Want more information on this brief story? A simple touch makes the entire text appear. Save it in your own personal puter if you like. These are among the predictions from munication experts working on the newspapers of the future. Pictured as part of broader home-based media and entertainment systems, puter newspapers will unite print and broadcast reporting, and offer news and analysis with video images of news events. Most of the technology is available now, but convincing more people that they dont need to read a newspaper is the next step. But resistance to puter newspapers may be stronger from within journalism. Since it is such a cultural change, it may be that the present generation of journalists and publishers will have to die off before the next generation realizes that the newspaper industry is no longer a newspaper industry. Technology is making the end of traditional newspapers unavoidable. Despite technological advances, it could take decades to replace newsprint with puter screens. It might take 30 to 40 years to plete the changeover because people need to buy puters and because newspapers have established financial interests in the paper industry.28. Which of the following is NOT an advantage of puter newspapers? A. They are cheaper than traditional newspapers. B. They are more convenient to read. C. You can choose the kind of voice you want to hear. D. You can easily save information for future use.29. It can be inferred that journalists are against puter newspapers because_. A. they dont know how to use puters B. they think puter newspapers take too much time to read C. they think the new technology is bad D. they have been trained to write for traditional newspapers30. We can infer from the passage that _. A. all technological changes are good B. new technologies dont always replace old ones C. new technologies will eventually replace old ones D. traditional newspapers are here to stay for another century31. What is the best title of the passage? A. puter newspapers are well liked. B. Newspapers of the future will be on the puter. C. Newspapers are out of fashion. D. New munications technology.DElectronic equipment is more harmful than you thought. According to the latest study, the regular use of text messages and e-mails can lower the IQ more than twice as much as smoking marijuana (大麻). That is the statement of researchers who have found that tapping away on a mobile phone or puter keypad or checking for electronic messages temporarily knocks up to 10 points off the users IQ. This rate of decline in intelligence pares unfavorably with the four-point drop in IQ associated with smoking marijuana, according to British researchers, who have described the phenomenon of improved stupidity as “infomania”. The research conducted by Hewlett Packard, the technology pany, has concluded that it is mainly a problem for adult workers, especially men. It is concluded that too much use of modern technology can damage a persons mind. It can cause a constant distraction of “always on” technology when employees should be concentrating on what they are paid to do. Infomania means that they lose concentration as their minds remain fixed in an almost permanent state of readiness to react to technology instead of focusing on the task in hand. The report also added that, in a long term, the brain will be considerably shaped by what we do to it and by the experience of daily life. At a microcellular (微细胞) level, the plex networks of nerve cells that make up parts of the brain actually change in response to certain experiences. Too much use of modern technology can be damaging not only to a persons mind, but to their social relationship. 1100 adults were interviewed during the research. More than 62 percent of them admitted that they were addicted to checking their e-mails and text messages so often that they scrutinized work-related ones even when at home or on holiday. Half said that they always responded immediately to an email and will even interrupt a meeting to do so. It is concluded that infomania is increasing stress and anxiety and affecting ones characteristics. Nine out of ten thought that colleagues who answered e-mails or messages during a face-to-face meeting were extremely rude. The effects on IQ were studied by Dr Glenn Wilson, a psychologist at University of London. “This is a very real and widespread phenomenon,” he said. “We have found that infomania will damage a workers performance by reducing their mental sharpness and changing their social life. panies should encourage a more balanced and appropriate way of working.”32. We can learn from the passage that “infomania” _.A. has a positive influence on ones IQ B. results in the change of part of the brainC. lies in the problem of lack of concentration D. is caused by too much use of modern technology33. The research mentioned in the passage is most probably about _.A. the important function of advanced technology B. the damage to ones brain done by unhealthy habitsC. the relevance between IQ and use of modern technology D. the relationship between intelligence and working effectiveness34. The underlined word “scrutinized” probably means “_”.A. examined carefully B. copied patientlyC. corrected quickly D. admitted freely35. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?
