B Teenagers have long been told that being active and taking part in sports is good for their health. But new research suggests that too much sport for teenagers could negatively affect their well-being just as much as too little sport. The US Department of Health and Human Services suggests that young people aged between 6 and 17 carry out at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, 7 hours a week. But researchers from Switzerland say their study suggests that 14 hours of physical activity a week is best for promoting good health in teenagers. However, they found that more than 14 hours appears to be detrimental to their health. To reach their findings, the researchers surveyed more than 1,245 teenagers aged between 16 and 20 from Switzerland. All participants were required to answer questions regarding height and weight, sports practice, sports injuries and well-being. Their well-being was assessed using the World Health Organization (WHO) Well-Being Index, which provides scores between 0 and 25. Of the participants, 50.4% were male with a mean age of 17.95 years. Almost 9% of these males were overweight. The overall well-being score for all participants was 17. The researchers divided sports participation into low (0-3.5 hours a week), average (3.6-10.5 hours), high (10.6-17.5 hours), and very high (more than 17.5 hours). The researchers found that participants in the low and very high activity groups were more than twice as likely to have well-being scores below 13, pared with participants who carried out around 14 hours of physical activity a week, but beyond 14 hours resulted in lower well-being scores. menting on their findings, the researchers say physical activity has been associated with positive emotional well-being, reduced sadness, anxiety and stress disorders, and improved self-esteem(自尊)in teenagers. The researchers note that their study stresses the importance for physicians caring for teenagers to check their level of sports practice and ask them about well-being. Teenagers probably need a supportive and closer follow-up of their health and well-being. The findings can inform guideline groups who produce remendations on sports practice for teenagers.25. From the first paragraph we can conclude that _.A. teenagers negatively do sports B. everything coin has two sidesC. active sports does good to health D. lack of exercise influences health26. What does the underlined word “detrimental” in Paragraph 2 mean? A. Positive. B. Essential. C. Beneficial. D. Harmful.27. What did the researchers find out? A. Overdoing sport exercise is unhealthy for teenagers. B. Taking part in sport less is the cause of overweight. C. Very high activity groups tend to get higher well-being scores. D. Self-esteem is improved by unlimited sport activity.28. How do physicians assess teenagers health from the study? A. The way to promote teenagers physical health. B. The importance of checking their level of workout. C. The method of improving their emotional well-being. D. The necessity of giving suggestions on their workout. C Do you believe that “showing effort” should count more than it does, or do you think its a misleading reward system that has a bad effect on the American character, both in school and out?To be perfectly honest, if I hadnt been awarded points for effort, I might have never pleted elementary school. On our report cards, the “E” was right there over the “F”: Effort was dangerously close to failure but you could stop yourself from failing if you tried hard.My inability to plete the most basic forms of math would have kept me in 4th grade long past middle age if the principal(校长) hadnt taken pity and let me move along. I passed my classes because I displayed effort, not because I learned math. But how can we help young people understand that life rarely rewards you for effort, especially if that effort doesnt lead to understanding of success?Rarely in life do we actually appreciate something more fully just because it took a lot of effort. Nobody wants to hear her doctor announce: “Boy, did I ever have trouble with your surgery(手术)? I had to get three guys to help me.”Why, then. Do we like to think that somebody must suffer to produce a work of art? I recently learned from Pamela Katzs book The partnership that the song Mack the Knife took less than 24 hours to write. And in my office I have printed out the following line from New York agent Besty Lerners book The Forest for the Trees: “Your struggle to produce a piece of writing of interest and value means nothing to the reader. He only cares if the piece succeeds.”Lets not pretend theres no difference between effort and acplishment; lets not pretend theres no difference between those who try hard and those who do well.We should learn to take real pride in a job well done and not expect praise for one simply carried out. What we need is to think honestly about our abilities, our talents and our limitations. And that will take some real effort.29. The author gives her own example of getting an E in math to prove that _. A. great effort may sometimes save you from failing B. you may work hard but still get bad result C. getting an E is much more difficult than getting an F D. her hard work helped her to make great progress in math30. We can infer from the article that _. A. young people dont know that effort is the most rewarding factor in life B. it is the doctors effort that patients appreciate the most C. people often appreciate something for various reasons other than effort D. it is true that as long as artists suffer a lot they can create best works31. What was the authors purpose in writing the passage? A. To suggest people making an effort in doing the things unbearable. B. To appreciate others efforts and acplishments with pride. C. To show effort is a misleading reward system with no bad effects. D. To advise people to think about their basic qualities first instead of effort. DEvery year thousands of tourists visit Pompeii, Italy. They see the sights that Pompeii is famous for-its stadium and theaters, its shops and restaurants. The tourists do not, however, see Pompeiis people. They do not see them because Pompeii has no people. No one has lived in Pompeii for almost 2,000 years. Once, Pompeii was a busy city of 22,000 people. It lay at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, a grass-covered volcano. Mount Vesuvius had not erupted for centuries, so the people of Pompeii felt safe. But they were not. In August of AD 79, Mount Vesuvius erupted. The entire top of the mountain exploded, and a huge black cloud rose into the air. Soon stones and hot ash began to fall on Pompeii. When the eruption ended two days later, Pompeii was buried under 20 feet of stones and ashes. Almost all of its people were dead. For centuries, Pompeii lay buried under stone and ash. Then, in the year 1861, an Italian scientist named Ginseppe began to uncover Pompeii. Slowly, carefully, Ginseppe and his men dug. The city looked almost the same as it had looked in AD 79. There were streets and fountains, houses and shops. There was a stadium with 20,000 seats. Perhaps the most important of all there everyday objects, which tell us a great deal about the people of Pompeii who lived in Pompeii. Many glasses and jars had some dark blue color in the bottom, so we know that the people of Pompeii liked wine. They liked bread, too; metal bread pans were in every bakery. In one bakery there were 81 round, flat loaves of bread-a type of bread that is still sold in Italy today. Tiny boxes filled with a dark, shiny powder tell us that women liked to wear eye-makeup. Geinseppe has died, but his work continues. One-fourth has not been uncovered yet. Scientists are still digging, still making discoveries that draw tourists to Pompeii.32. Why do large number of people e to Pompeii each year? A. To visit the volcano B. To shop and eat there C. To watch sports and plays D. To see how Pompeiians lived33. Why had so many Pompeiians remained by volcanic Mount Vesuvius? A. The city nearby offered all kinds of fun. B. The area produced the finest wine in Italy. C. Few people expected the volcano to erupt again. D. The mountain was beautiful and covered with grass.34. Why did the city uncovered look almost the same as it had looked in AD 79? A. Because ginseppe and his men dug it slowly and carefully. B. Because the city was buried alive and remained untouched. C. Because scientists successfully rebuilt the city with everyday objects. D. Because nobody had lived in the city ever since the volcano erupted.35. What do we know about the Pompeiians who live 3,000 years ago? A. They lived more or less the same as Italians now do. B. They liked women wearing all kinds of makeup. C. They enjoyed a lazy life with drinking and eating. D. They went back to Pompeii after the eruption in AD 79.第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 There is one thing that can ruin vacations, make business meetings less than successful, and can cause more problems than anything else for air travelers. Jet lag! 36 The travel time is too fast for the human body to adjust easily. Long distance air travel to a new time zone disrupts (打乱) three important senses: the sense of place, the sense of time, and the sense of well-being. Sense of place: To some degree, all locations are geographically and even chemically different from one another. Humans, like all living things, have a strong sense of place. 37 Sense of time: We all also have a natural sense of time that is linked to our sense of place. Our bodies function on a program that takes about a day to run. 38 This is why travel to a distant time zone makes us miss the usual hometown patterns of something as simple as the times of sunrise and sunset. Sense of well-being: We have a sense of well-being when we are healthy and happy. 39 That is why flying to a new environment and time zone often causes a disruption in our sense of well-being. For thousands of years, people didnt experience disruption in their sense of time and place because there were no rapid means of transportation. 40 However, although we can travel by plane now, our bodies have not yet adapted to long-distance air travel. That is why we suffer the jet lag.A. The invention of the airplane changed all this.B. We can make the effort to overe the jet lag.C. They sense the different qualities of dawn, noon, and midnight.D. Jet lag result from traveling a long distance to a new zone.E. This sense is strongly connected to our senses of place and time.F. It took weeks, months, years, or even generations to travel great distances.G. This makes people homesick for familiar surroundings and wish for their own bed.第三部分 英语知识运用(共两节,满分45分)第一节 完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。The easy way isnt always easiest.
