usual.)T:Today well read the famous novel The Moonstone,but I must tell you that in fact you are already familiar with the story,because what you described for the pictures in Warming up and the conversations you made up for the birthday party in Speaking,even the listening part are all related to the story.S1:The stories we made yesterday are more or less like the novel Moonstone.Yes?T:Yes,you are right.Ss:That really makes us happy.T:The same goes for me.Step Pre-readingT:Since you are familiar with the story to some extent,I want to know what youve already known about the story The Moonstone.S2:Its a detective story.The story begins with the loss of the precious stone,the Moonstone.S3:Someone stole the Moonstone.S4:One day the Moonstone was given to a beautiful girl as a gift.S5:The Moonstone was stolen again.T:What do you think happens next in the story?S4:Its time for the detective to solve the puzzle,I think.Step ReadingT:Now you can enjoy the mysterious story.Read the passage silently and quickly to get the general idea.After a while,Ill ask you a few questions about it.(Students are given a few minutes to read the text.)T:Well,have you finished reading it?Ss:Yes.T:OK.Can you tell us who gave the Moonstone to Rachel and why he gave it to her?S5:Yes,Rachels uncle entrusted someone to give the Moonstone to Rachel and the reason why he gave it to her is that he wanted to pass on his bad fortune to her.T:As we know,Rachels birthday was not a success.Why not?S6:Because Rachel declined Godfreys proposal of marriage.Dr Candy and Franklin had a quarrel and some Indians failed to entertain the guests,it was not a success.T:Whod like to tell us why Sergeant Cuff believed that the garment with the paint stain belonged to the thief?S7:According to the passage,the painting on the door was finished on the day of Rachels birthday.It was still wet when the thief managed to get into Rachels room.So the garment with the paint belonged to the thief.T:Well done.In fact,there are some new phrases in this passage.They are all very important and useful to understand the story better.Please look at the blackboard and I will give you some explanations.1.Considerate towards somebody:careful not to hurt or bring inconvenience to others.e.g.Betty is very considerate towards her husband.2.might/may have done:show the possibility of something having happened in the past.e.g.He may have lost his way.He might just possibly have lost his keys.3.in an act of revenge:in order to return an injury.e.g.Terrorists bombed the police station in an act of revenge for the arrests.4.(from/out of)force of habit:to do some things in a certain way from always having done so in the paste.g.Its force of habit that gets me out of bed at 7:15 each morning.(Bb:considerate towards,in an act of revenge,may/might have done,force of habit)T:Are you clear about them?Ss:Yes.T:The passage is so good.Lets read it again,but this time you should read it carefully to make a list of the people and the reason why Sergeant Cuff suspected that they might have stolen the Moonstone.(Give students enough time to read the passage carefully,and then check their answers.)SuspectReason for Suspicionthe IndiansThey followed the Moonstone around the world waiting for an opportunity to take it back to In-dia.GodfreyHe might have stolen the Moonstone as revenge for loss of face,because Rachel turned down his proposal of marriage.Dr CandyAs with Godfrey,he lost face because of the quarrelling with Franklin.RosannaShe might have taken the diamond either from force of habit,for she was a thief before Rachels mother gave her a job or cause a disagreement between Rachel and Franklin.RachelPerhaps she had debts that needed to be paid.FranklinHe gave the detective as much assistance as he can.His enthusiasm was the reason why he was suspected,because it was not his business.T:I cant be more satisfied with your answers.Now imagine you are a detective,and try to tell us who do you think stole the Moonstone.Of course before you make a decision,you can have a discussion about the different people appearing in the story in groups.(Teacher gives students some time to discuss and then collects their answers.)T:Who do you think stole the Moonstone?S8:I think Godfrey stole the Moonstone.He was disappointed in love with Rachel.Maybe he was very angry,and in order to make Rachel unhappy too,he stole the Moonstone,which is the most splendid gift to Rachel according to the passage.S9:The Indians must be thieves.They offered to entertain the guests,but they were not very skilled and behaved strangely at Rachels birthday party.Besides,Mr Cuff found out that they had been following the Moonstone around the world to take it back to India.Perhaps they thought the Moonstone that beautiful Rachel received as her birthday gift was the one that they were looking for.So they stole it.T:In my opinion,your two different answers are both reasonable.Whose answer is exactly right?Maybe youll get the correct answer in our class tomorrow.Step Summary and HomeworkT:Today weve enjoyed part of the famous mysterious story The
