2019-2020年高中英语第二册上Unit9Savingtheearth-Period2LetisreadGoals Provide students with opportunity to know about the Earth Summit. Know about the purpose of the Earth Summit: How can the earth be better taken care of? Have a understanding of “sustainable development”, one of the main themes of 2002 Earth Summit. Help the students know about the serious problems,or rather, “earth issues”, existing in the world. The Earth Summit is a place to find solutions for the future.ProceduresLeading in (1): by introduction. (lockstep work, approx. 5 min.)The Earth Summit is the informal and best-known name for the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED). The Earth Summit was first held in Stockholm, capital of Sweden, to exchange ideas on how to protect the earth. Since 1972 to 2002, the Earth Summit has altogether been held 21 times, each with a theme. For example, the theme of the first Earth Summit was on the Human Environment, the theme of the 14th Earth Summit in Beijing in 1995 was on Action for Equality, Development and Peace, and the theme of the 21st Earth Summit in Johannesburg in 2002 was on Sustainable Development. Now, boys and girls, lets read the text in silence, and answer my question: Why is the Earth Summit not only just about problems, but also a place to find solutions for the future?Leading in (2): by story. (Lockstep work, approx. 5 min.)Boys and girls, today Id like to tell you a story about environmental protection. As we all know, the earth is our home, without which we couldnt live in the world. But it has been polluted for a long time. In order to take good care of it, the United Nations made 1970 World Conservation(自然保护)Year. As a result, people know that the world is in danger. It was hoped that government would act quickly in order to “conserve” the nature. Here is one example of the problem. At one time there were 1,300 different plants, trees and flowers in Holland, but now only 866 remain. The others have been destroyed by modern man and his technology. We are changing the earth, the air and water, and everything that grows and lives. We cant live without these things. If we continue like this, we shall destroy ourselves. What will happen in the future? Perhaps it is more important to ask, “What must we do now?” The people who will be living in the world of tomorrow are the young of today. A lot of them know that conservation is necessary. Many are helping to save our world. They plant trees, build bridges across rivers in forests, and so on. In a small town in the United States a large group of girls cleaned the banks of 11 kilometers of their river. Young people may hear about a record called “No ones going to change our world”. It was made by the Beatles, Cliff Richard and other singers. The money from it will help to conserve wild animals.( from:高中英语阅读一路通高三p. 341)Task 1: Reading for general ideas.
