Ask them which of the activities they do most often in Chinese (e.g. listening to songs/reading magazine articles) and which they do least often (e.g. writing a formal letter to a newspaper). Do they have any problems with any of these activities in Chinese? Have they done any of these activities in English? Resource used: Cassette. Background Chat show: TV programme where guests, usually celebrities, come and talk to a journalist, often about their own lives. Documentary: a serious programme with information/ opinions about a topic of current interest. The BBCs series Panorama, is one of the most prestigious documentaries on British TV. Game show: a competition or quiz in which contestants take part, e.g. Gladiators. Soap opera: popular drama series that goes on for a long time, e.g. Coronation Street about the lives of people in a street in Manchester, and Eastenders about the lives of people living in the East End of London. Quality newspaper or broadsheet is a British paper that usually has large pages and contains a lot of serious articles, e.g. about politics, business and science. Quality papers in Britain are The Times, The Independent, The Guardian, The Daily Telegraph. Local papers are newspapers from cities or towns that report a lot of local news. They are usually published weekly. Tabloids are small-format newspapers containing only short, simple reports on the main news and favouring human interest stories and stories about the personal lives of famous people. Warm-up Exercise 1 Key Words TV programmes: chat show, documentary, game show, soap opera, the news The Internet: website Magazines about: cars, computers, current affairs, fashion, films, music, sport, travel Newspapers: quality newspaper, local newspaper, tabloid newspaper Students read through the Key Words and make a list of the things they can see on the page. Students use a dictionary to check the three kinds of British newspaper. And Michael Owen pushes the ball out to the right Exercise 3 Read through the questions with the class. Students work in pairs answering the questions. Some of the students then tell the class about their partner. Options Practice Students look back at the Key Words in Exercise 1. In pairs, students relate each Key Word to an example in their own country, e.g. A popular chat show on our television is . / There is a magazine about computers called .
