Once, school officials could be sure that if they kicked a misbehaving student out of school, the students angry and embarrassed parents would be sure to punish their child. But these days, too many parents are working, while others dont really care. For some students, suspension has become another holiday, all the sweeter because everyone else is in class. Now, several school leaders in Ventura County are having second thoughts about suspension. They are changing rules and using a new approach when it comes to punishmentinstead of sending students home, they are keeping more troublemakers at school. Students who break school rules are still suspended, but must stay on school grounds, where they catch up on homework, write personal goals, or clean up the school. The school officials are also concerned about teens falling behind in school. “We want to keep students in school because thats our business,” said the school leader Bob La Bella. He said at-school suspension prevents the “snowball effect”, when a student who gets in trouble in one class is sent home for a few days and ends up behind in all six classes. In several schools, teachers or school staff watch over suspended students. Some schools call their at-school suspension classes “opportunity rooms”. Educators say these places are where students have the opportunity to turn their lives around. “Behavior is an outward sign of an inner problem in school,” said the school leader Chuck Weis. “Suspension can give us an opportunity to work on the real problem.”Middle school students from Ventura are sent to a special “suspension school” held on Fridays at Ventura College. They spend from 8 in the morning to 2 in the afternoon there, involved in activities aimed at controlling their anger, raising their self-confidence, and improving their attitude toward school. In return, the suspension doesnt show up on their school record. At 8:15 a.m. on a recent Friday, teacher Peter Shedlosky asked the students to introduce themselves: their names, grades, schools, and reasons for suspension. A few kids voices cracked as they took their turns reciting their misbehavior: “I got kicked out of class. I pushed this guy. I beat up some kid. I got into a fight.”Ventura educators say having the suspension school in a college also encourages the students to improve their behavior and grades. During the day, they take a tour of the college campus, look through the college material, and talk about careers.9.What is special about suspension in Ventura County?()A.It gives parents time to work on real problems.B.It shows up on the suspended kids school record.C.It gets parents involved in the lives of their suspended kids.D.It offers a chance for suspended kids to improve themselves.10.Serving suspension in a college .() A.helps suspended students change attitude toward their parentsB.motivates suspended students to reflect on and control behaviorC.gives suspended students the opportunity to take college coursesD.includes suspended students doing fun activities to improve grades11.What is the passage mainly about?()A.School leaders arent taking suspension seriously.B.Schools are making suspension more effective.C.Students are having too much fun at school.D.Suspensions should have come to an end.12.What does the writer probably think of suspension at school?()A.Acceptable.B.Doubtful.C.Careful.D.Harmful. Im David and Ive been living in the United States for over ten years, and I now say thank you about 50 times a day. Often I do it without thinking. I say thank you to the cashier at the coffee shop. I say thank you to my wife and my 5-year-old daughter several times a day for different things. When I first moved to the United States, I didnt know I was supposed to thank someone who took my money for something I bought at a store. I had no idea I was supposed to thank people when they asked how I was doing.I grew up in the northern Indian city of Lucknow, in a culture in which saying thank you is not done lightly. I learned to say thank you in English when I was in elementary school. And when I thanked anyone, I said it in English, which was less embarrassing and more casual than doing so in Hindi. I saved my thanks for those who had done huge favors for me. And I didnt thank my friends or classmates very often. When I did, they regarded the act as a playful way to practise English.Saying dhanyavaad, or thank you in Hindi, to someone without looking at him or her is just as good as not saying it at all. As a kid, I heard my father say dhanyavaad to people of his age, and he did it as seriously as possible, with his hands joined in front of his chest. He wasnt just thanking someone for something, but asking for an opportunity to return the favor. Now, when I travel to India, I often upset people by saying thank you to them. On a recent trip home, I was invited to my uncles house for dinner. Hes been a father figure to me, teaching me many things at every step of my life. That day, I made the mistake of telling him, in English, “Thank you for inviting me.” before leaving his house. He didnt respond, but I saw he was unhappy. I couldnt even apologize for thanking him. The damage was done.Different countries and different people have different manners. We must find out their customs, so that they will not think us ill-mannered.13.How often does David say thank you now?  14.Where did David grow up?  15.Who did David save his thanks for?  16.What is the third paragraph mainly about?  17.Why was Davids uncle unhappy? 1.B根据上文的“Division was my weakest subject.” 2.A根据下文“With every slow step I took”可知,这里应该是“我”从椅子上起身。故选A。 4.C5.A根据上文的“As the other girl finished and danced back to her seat”可以推断出“我”在胡乱写完之后,也快速返回自己的座位上。故选A。 8.D根据下文的“gives me the motivation to answer all of those whys”可知这个地方考查了原词复现。故选D。. 根据倒数第三段“They spend from 8 in the morning to 2 in the afternoon there, involved in activities aimed at controlling their anger, raising their self-confidence, and improving their attitude toward school. In return, the suspension doesnt show up on their school record.” 根据最后一段第一句“Ventura educators say having the suspension school in a college also encourages the students to improve their behavior and grades.” 根据第三段第一、二句 “Now, several school leaders in Ventura County are having second thoughts about suspension. They are changing rules and using a new approach when it comes to punishmentinstead of sending students home, they are keeping more troublemakers at school.” 根据第五段中的“Educators say these places are where students have the opportunity to turn their lives around. Behavior is an outward sign of an inner problem in school, said the school leader Chuck Weis. Suspension can give us an opportunity to work on the real problem.” A。.13.Now he says thank you about 50 times a day./About 50 times a day.14.He grew up in the northern Indian city of Lucknow./In the northern Indian city of Lucknow.15.He saved his thanks for those who had done huge favors for him./The people who had done huge favors for him.16.How Davids father says thank you in Hindi./ How people say thank you in Hindi./The way people express their thanks in Hindi.17.Because he said thank you to his uncle./ Because he hurt his uncles feeling by saying thank you to him.
