、r the questions. Now listen to the passage. The family is changing. In the past, grandparents, parents and children used to live together, and they had an extended family. But family structure is changing throughout the world. The nuclear family consists of only one father, one mother and children,

、it is becoming the main family structure everywhere. The nuclear family offers married women some advantages: they have freedom from their relatives, and the husband does not have all the power of the family. Studies show that in nuclear families men and women usually make an equal number of decisio

、ns about family life. But wives usually have to pay for the benefits of freedom and power. When women lived in extended families, sisters, grandparents and aunts helped one another with housework and childcare. Wives in nuclear families do not often enjoy this benefit, and they have another disadvan

、tage, too: women generally live longer than their husbands, so older women from nuclear families often have to live alone. Studies show that women are generally less satisfied with marriage than men are. In the past, men worked outside the home and women worked inside. Housework and childcare were a

、 full-time job, and there was no time for anything else. Now women work outside and have more freedom than they did in the past, but they still have to do most of the housework. The women actually have two full-time jobs, and they have not much free time. Questions 15 to 17 are based on the followin

Finally, on her third birthday, Midori was handed a package: a tiny violin, about half the normal size. Almost from the mo

、ment Midori was born, her mother knew she was sensitive to music. For several years mother and daughter practiced together day after day. She was eager to learn. Failure often led to tears, though she never once turned from the instrument. Instead, she persisted until the problem was overcome. One d

、ay Johnston, an American musician, heard Midori playing the violin. He couldnt believe she was just eight years old. She must make a tape and I will take it to the United States, the musician said. A famous American violin teacher heard the tape. He, too, had difficulty believing his ears. The playi

In 1982, Midori and her mother moved to New York City, leaving behind a comfortable life in Japan. Questions 18 to 20 are based on the following passage. At the end of the passage, you w

、ill be given 15 seconds to answer the questions. Now listen to the passage. One of the most feared occurrences in nature is the tornado. The area most frequently the target of this violent windstorm is the Great Plains, the region extending from the Rockies to the Mississippi, and from Canada down th

、rough Texas. When warm, moist air meets with cooler, drier air at low levels, a tornado often occurs. Prior to the formation of the familiar funnel-shaped cloud, the sky is very clear. Then, a black line suddenly appears. As this black area moves in, the fast wind becomes hot and moist and a deep st

、illness encircles the landscape. Because the area pressure drops steadily during a tornado, breathing becomes difficult. Insects fall to the ground, unable to balance themselves in flight. Suddenly, a black funnel resembling a giant whip dips down out of the sky, destroying what it touches, and then retreats. Although a tornado usually destroys property rather than lives, an average of 120 people die yearly as a result of these violent storms. It is obvious why the tornado is feared throughout the Great Plains.SECTION C NEWS BROADCAST
