As journalism becomes more and more competitive, all of us - whether in broadcast news or in print (some may want to argue that this is true more of broadcast news, and I perhaps wouldnt want to debate that) - are falling back on the tried and true local news formulas. We have, by and large accepted the proposition that people don't care about foreign news, don't really care much about hard news-at all - that "feel-good news, entertainment, “info-tainment”,features, and gossip sell better than anything serious and certainly sell better than anything too disturbing.I believe that kind of talk is wrong. I believe that kind of talk is dangerous. And 1 know that kind of talk has nothing to do with leadership and public service. Using public opinion polls, focus groups, and other market research techniques in a limited role as informational tools is one thing: using them as an excuse to duck our responsibility to the public trust is quite another. And for journalists to become slaves to market research - like the politicians before us - is, I submit, most dangerous of all. Where are the publishers, editors, and reporters of grit, gumption, and guts? Where are the ones who will follow their conscience or even their “nose for news” instead of the public opinion polls? Harry Truman once said that, if Moses bad taken a public opinion poll, he would never left Egypt.Of course. There is one special problem for those of us who earn, our living reporting the news that others make. Leadership requires definite opinions on which course to take, what path to follow; but those of us in the mainstream media are trained to set our opinions aside as far as humanly possible. We try to keep open minds; by and large, we aren't joiners. We know (often better than were given credit for) that we dont have any secret formulas for answering the important questions. So we can justifiably ask: “How are we to lead?” I know that we in the media are. George Bernard Shaw once observed that newspapers are unable to distinguish between a bicycle accident and the collapse of civilization. For us, leadership should be the willingness to distinguish between whats merely interesting and whats vitally important. Now, when someone says that some stories are more important than others, he or she is often labeled an elitist, someone, who just doesn't understand what “real people care about. This is, of course, the familiar defense for trash television and trash tabloids. And it's also the reason given for reducing foreign news coverage as well as coverage political campaigns. There are a lot of people in the business who say “real people wont care unless it bleeds or bums. There are a lot of doctors and market researchers out there who insist that "real people” don't care much what happens in the rest of the world - they want the words American and the United States plastered all over their news like flags crowding a campaign platform.1. Which of the following words can substitute duck in the second paragraph?2. What did Harry Truman mean by saying that “if Moses had taken a public opinion poll, he would never have left Egypt?3. But as useful as computers are, theyre nowhere close to achieving anything remotely resembling these early aspirations for humanlike behavior. 35. Never mind something as complex as conversations the most powerful computers strugule to reliably recognize the shape of an object the most elementary of tasks for a ten-month-old kid.A growing group of AI researchers think they know where the held went wrong. The problem, the scientists say, is that AI has been trying to separate the highest, most abstract levels of thought, like language and mathematics, and to duplicate them with logical, step-by-step programs. A new movement in AI, on the other hand, takes a closer look at the more roundabout way in which nature came up with intelligence. Many of these researchers study evolution and natural adaptation instead of formal logic and conventional computer programs. Rather than digital computers and transistors, some want to work with brain cells and proteins. The results of these early efforts are as promising as they are peculiar, and the new nature-based AI movement is slowly but surely moving to the forefront of the field.Imitating the brain's neural, network is a huge step in the right direction, says computer scientist and biophysicist Michael Conrad, but it still misses an important aspect of natural intelligence. “People tend to treat the brain as if it were made up of color-coded transistors”, he explains, “but its not simply a clever network of switches. There are lots of important things going on inside the brain cells themselves.” Specifically, Conrad believes that many of the brains capabilities stem from the pattern-recognition proficiency of the individual molecules that make up each brain cell. The best way to build and artificially intelligent device, he claims, would be to build it around the same sort of molecular skills.Right now, the notion that conventional computers and software are fundamentally incapable of matching the processes that take place in the brain remains controversial. But if it proves true, then the efforts of Conrad and his fellow AI rebels could turn out to be the only game in town.1. The author says that the powerful computers of today( ).2. The new trend in artificial intelligence research stems from( ).3. Conrad and his group of AI researchers have been making enormous efforts to( ).4. What's the authors opinion about the new AI movement?5. Which of the following is closet in meaning to the underlined phrase “the only game in town” (para.4)?问题1选项A.are capable of reliably recognizing the Shape of an objectB.are close to exhibiting humanlike behaviorC.are not very different in their performance from those of the 50sD.still cannot communicate with people in a human language问题2选项A.the shift of the focus of study on to the recognition of the shapes of objectsB.the belief that human intelligence cannot be duplicated with logical, step-by-step programs.C.the aspirations of scientists to duplicate the intelligence of a ten-month-old child.D.the efforts made by scientist in the study of the similarities between transistors and brain cells问题3选项A.find a roundabout way to design powerful computersB.build a computer using a clever network of switchesC.find out how intelligence developed in natureD.separate the highest and most abstract levels of thought问题4选项A.It has created a sensation among artificial intelligence researchers but will soon die out.B.Its a breakthrough in duplicating human thought processes.C.Its more like a peculiar game rather than a real scientific effort.D.It may prove to be in the right direction though nobody is sure of its future prospects.问题5选项A.The only approach to building an artificially intelligent computer.B.The only way for them to win a prize in artificial intelligence research.C.The only area worth studying in computer science.D.The only game they would like to play in town.【答案】第1题:D第2题:B第3题:C第4题:D第5题:D【解析】1.推理判断题。由第一段Never mind something as complex as conversations, the most powerful computers strugule to reliably recognize the shape of an object the most elementary of tasks for a ten-month-old kid. 由第二段“A growing group of AI researchers think they know where the held went wrong. The problem, the scientists say, is that AI has been trying to separate the highest, most abstract levels of thought, like language and mathematics, and to duplicate them with logical, step-by-step programs. A new movement in AI Many of these researchers study evolution and natural adaptation instead of formal logic and conventional computer programs.” 由第二段“Rather than digital computers and transistors, some want to work with brain cells and proteins. The results of these early efforts are as promising as they are peculiar, and the new nature-based AI movement is slowly but surely moving to the forefront of the field. 有些人想研究脑细胞和蛋白质,而不是数字计算机和晶体管。这些早期努力的结果是有希望的,因为他们是独特的,和新的自然为基础的人工智能运动是缓慢的,但肯定会走向该领域的前沿。”以及第三段“Specifically, Conrad believes that many of the brains capabilities stem from the pattern-recognition proficiency of the individual molecules that make up each brain cell. The best way to build and artificially intelligent device, he claims, would be to build it around the same sort of molecular skills. 具体地说,康拉德认为,大脑的许多能力源于组成每个脑细胞的单个分子的模式识别能力。他声称,制造人工智能设备的最佳方法,是围绕同样的分子技术来制造。可知康拉德及其AI研究团队将把大脑的分子技术运用于人工智能设备上,发起了以自然为基础的人工智能运动。故C项“该团队对了解智力是如何在自然界中发展的作出了巨大努力。”正确。4.推理判断题。由第二段“The results of these early efforts are as promising as they are peculiar, and the new nature-based AI movement is slowly but surely moving to the forefront of the field. 这些早期努力的结果是有希望的,因为他们是独特的,虽然新的以自然为基础的人工智能运动是缓慢的,但肯定会走向该领域的前沿。可知作者认为人工智能运动将走向该领域前沿,也就意味着人工智研究的方向是正确的。故D项“尽管没有人能确定它的未来前景,但它被证明是在正确的方向上。”正确。5.由倒数第二段The best way to build and artificially intelligent device, he claims, would be to build it around the same sort of molecular skills. 他声称,制造人工智能设备的最佳方法,是围绕同样的分子技术来制造。和最后一段“Right now, the notion that conventional computers and software are fundamentally incapable of matching the processes that take place in the brain remains controversial. But if it proves true, then the efforts of Conrad and his fellow AI rebels could turn out to be the only game in town. 目前,对于传统的计算机和软件根本无法匹配大脑中发生的过程仍然存在争议。但如果这是真的,那么康拉德和他的同伴们的努力可能是唯一的游戏。联系上下文可知,如果传统的计算机和软件根本无法匹配大脑过程这个观点是正确的,那么康拉德和其团队的观点,即将大脑同样的分子技术运用于人工智能设备的制造上是唯一可行的制造新的人工智能计算机的方法。故A项“这是制造人工智能计算机的唯一方法”正确。12. 单选题I have long believed that trouble between the races is seldom what it appears to be. It was not hard to see after my first talks with students that racial tension on campus is a problem that misrepresents itself. It has the same look, the typical pattern, of Americas timeless racial conflictwhite racism and black protest. And I think part of our concern over it comes from the fact that it has the feel of a relapse, illness gone and come again. But if we are seeing the same symptoms, I dont believe we are dealing with the same illness. For one thing, I think racial tension on campus is the result more of racial equality than inequality. How to live with racial difference has been Americas profound social problem. For the first 100 years or so following emancipation it was controlled by a legally approved inequality that acted as a buffer between the races. No longer is this the case. On campuses today, as throughout society, blacks enjoy equality under the lawa profound social advancement. No student may be kept out of a class or a dormitory or an extracurricular activity because of his or her race. But there is a paradox here. On a campus where members of all races are gathered, mixed together in the classroom as well as socially, differences are more exposed than ever. And this is where the trouble starts. For members of each race-young adults coming into their own, often away from home for the first time -bring to this site of freedom, exploration, and now, today, equality, very deep fears and anxieties, not fully developed feelings of racial shame, anger, and guilt. These feelings could lie hidden in the home, in familiar neighborhoods, in simpler days of childhood. But the college campus, with its structures of interaction and adult-level competition一the big exam, the dorm, the “mixer”is another matter. I think campus racism is born of the rub between racial difference and a setting, the campus itself, devoted to interaction and equality. On our campuses, such concentrated micro-societies, all that remains unresolved between blacks and whites, all the old wounds and shames that have never been addressed, present themselves for attention-and present our youth with pressures they cannot always handle.1. According to the author, ( ).2. Nowadays racial tension on campus most probably starts with( ).3. The phrase “coming into their own on Line 8 of Paragraph 2 probably means( ).4. When young adults enter college for the first time, ( ) .5. The passage is mainly about( ).问题1选项A.people have misunderstood the causes of racial tensionB.people dont understand the causes of racial tensionC.racial tension keeps the same typical pattern in historyD.racial tension on campus is the same as racial tension in society问题2选项A.racial inequalityB.sudden awareness of racial differencesC.white racismD.racial interaction and competition问题3选项A.entering their own homesB.showing their own valuesC.entering their own collegesD.having their own problems问题4选项A.they bring freedom and exploration to campusB.they suffer from racial inequality and differencesC.they bring with them fear, anxiety and other feelingsD.they suffer from competitions in big exams问题5选项A.racial inequality in American societyB.racial tension in American societyC.racial equality on campus and in societyD.the causes of racial tension on campus【答案】第1题:C第2题:D第3题:C第4题:C第5题:D【解析】第1题:1.推理判断题。由第一段“It has the same look, the typical pattern, of Americas timeless racial conflictwhite racism and black protest.校园种族矛盾与美国永恒的种族冲突的经典模式-白人种族主义与黑人抗议是相同的。”可知种矛盾在历史上有相同的模式。故C项正确。A项“人们误解了种族紧张的原因”以及B项“人们不理解种族紧张的原因”是对“It was not hard to see after my first
