behavior toward Katherine? How would you make the Director understand why Katherine felt frustrated and angry?幻灯片幻灯片 17This is a typical cultural clash between Chinese and Westerners. There is a great difference in the concept of appointment and its behavior pattern in different cultures. To Americans,an appointment is a confirmation to meet at a precise time.If an appointment is scheduled, both parties should respect the appointment time.In addition,Westerners are good time-keepers;they adhere strictly to schedules.Comment(case 3):However,Chinese view appointments in a more flexible manner. They are more casual about commitments. This difference in attitudes toward appointment was the root of Katherines unhappiness.Since the Director made an ten oclock appointment,he should have tried to avoid any interruption. However, when Katherine arrived on time, the Director was still talking with another teacher. When their meeting finally began,it was interrupted again. There is no wonder Katherine became frustrated and angry.Questions C5.Questions 1)Is language communication necessary in making friends or finding lovers?2)How could you interpret the case?C8.Question:Can you explain virtually envelop each other in their breath. They dont seem to feel comfortable unless they can smell each other.Smell is so important in interaction that it is not only considered comfortable but also desirable.A lot of body touch, such as holding hands, patting, and hugging.English-speaking countriesPhysical contact is generally avoided in conversation among ordinary friends or acquaintances.Touching someone casually may cause unpleasant reactions. If one touches another person accidentally,he or she usually make an apology such as“Sorry,oh,Im sorry”,or“Excuse me”.Chinese and other Asian culturesThere is little body touching in public, not even among intimate friends or family members, with the exception to babies and children.Chinese like fondling their babies or small children.(Such behaviorwhether touching, patting, hugging or kissingcan be quite embarrassing and awkward for the western mothers)However, such actions in their own culture would be considered rude, intrusive and offensive, and could arouse a strong dislike and even repugnance.Cultures of Arabs,Southern and Western Europeans,Jews and LatinsCultures of Americans,Northern Europeans and OrientalsTouch&Non-touch culturePlease analysize the Case 1 in the textbook on page 85 and answer the question. Why did that woman suddenly stop talking with Mark and turned to another man?Case 1 Personal Space3.Practice This is a typical case of misunderstanding caused by different perceptions about body distance. There is a lot of evidence to show that body distance varies with different people, different circumstances, and different cultures.Comment:In Denmark,at a formal event, the intimate space is usually between 20 to 30 centimeters. While in Australia, such an occasion requires a body distance of 40 to 50 centimeters. Therefore, when a Dane talks with an Australian, the problem arises:the Dane is accustomed to a close distance while Australian is comfortable with a great distance. In this case,Mark,by trying to establish his normal intimate space, infringed on the Australian ladys space.Because of this, she felt somewhat threatened and lost her sense of comfort. At that moment, the nearby man offered her the opportunity to excuse herself from Mark.If Mark had had some knowledge about the expected personal space for Australians, the encounter might have been totally different.Comment:Differences in Seating Arrangements 1Americans tend to talk with those opposite them rather than those seated or standing beside them.Differences in Seating Arrangements 1In China, seating arrangements take on a different meaning.Facing someone directly or sitting on opposite sides of a desk or table makes Chinese feel as if they are on trial. In China, meetings often take place with people sitting next to each other.1.Time LanguageM-Time:one thing at a timeP-Time:several things at a time2.Space LanguageShort distanceMedium distanceLong distanceSummaryBody Language Body language means more than just hand or arm gestures;it refers to any little movement of any part of the body.Case 4 She Is Not Supposed to Be Wearing Trousers (p.89)Why did the two Korean interpreters continue to study the Chinese female teachers trousers? In Korea,a woman with social status will generally wear dress or skirt.Very few women wear trousers.Women wearing trousers are generally common citizens of low social status.Comment(case 4):This is why they continued to look at the two Chinese womens trousers.Females in high school or university all wear skirts with few exceptions.Text Study1.What is the main idea of each part(posture, gestures, facial expressions and eye contact)?2.Could you give an example of each part to show the differences of body language? Please read Body
