Their advisor, Ms. Kim Saraiva, Health Education teacher at the Angelo, works with this select group of students to guide them and educate them in this excellent program which enables peers to resolve disputes, using a process involving talking and active listening. Students are trained to develop and refine the necessary skills for effective communication. Students need to apply to be a Peer Mediator and they need their parents' permission. Teachers' recommendations are given and interviews are conducted. Finally, each student who has been selected will go through a training session and commit to weekly meetings. The peer mediators usually work in pairs and are scheduled for duty by their advisors. Students in conflict can choose to use it. Mediators obtain consent from all who are involved. Participation must be voluntary and each member must agree to work together to resolve their conflict.
