Today it is estimated that some 260 million people speak it as a native language, mainly in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. In addition to the standard varieties of English found in the

、se areas, there are a great many regional and social varieties of the language“今天,据估计大约有2.6亿人把英语作为母语使用,主要分布在美国、加拿大、英国、爱尔兰、南非、澳大利亚和新西兰。

Besides serving the infinite needs of its native speakers, English is a language in which some of the most important works in science, technology, and other fields are being produced, and not always by native speakers.“除了满足以英语为母语的人无穷无尽的需求外,在科学、技术和其他领域,一些最重要的著作也是用英语写成的,而且这些著作并不总是由以英语为母语的人写成的”,

The purposes for which English is learned and the situations in which such learning takes place are so varied that it is difficult to define and still more difficult to assess what constitutes an adequate working knowledge for each

It is widely used for such purposes as meteorological and airport communications, international conferences, and the dissemination of information over the radio and television networks of many nations.“它被广泛用于气象和机场通信、国际会议以及通过许多国家的无线电和电视网络传播信息等目的”,从这

关注首末两段中心句,第一段中心句是第二句there are a great many regional and social varieties of the language, as well as various levels of usage that are employed both in its spoken and written forms. The main

、 reason for the widespread demand for English is its present-day importance as a world language“对英语的广泛需求的主要原因是它作为一种世界语言在当今的重要性”,这段讲的是为什么很多人会学英语的原因。 A选项“是什么构成了一个人足够的英语工作知识”,作者已经在第二段最后一句说明了it is difficult to define and still more difficult to assess what constitutes an

、 adequate working knowledge for each situation. It is a language of wider communication for a number of developing countries, especially former

、 British colonies. Many of these countries have multilingual populations and need a language for

、 internal communication in such matters as government, commerce industry, law and education as well as for international communication and for access to the scientific and technological development in the West.“这些国家中有许多人口使用多种语言,在政府、商业、工业、法律和教育等方面的内部交流以及国际交流和了解西方的科学和技术发展都需要一种语言。”

2. 填空题Directions: In this section, you are going to read a passage with ten statements attached to it.
