In China, people

6、 tend to spare some time to be stay together with their families or enjoy a peaceful time or relax themselves. But in USA, Time is treated as if it were something almost real. People budget it, waste it, steal it, kill it, cut it, account for it; they also charge for it. They do this because time is

7、 a precious resource.Everyone is in a rushoften under pressure City people always appear to be hurrying to get where they are going, restlessly seeking attention in a store, or elbowing others as they try to plete their shopping.Q2: What is culture shock?Culture shock is the personal disorientation

8、a person may feel when experiencing an unfamiliar way of life due to immigration or a visit to a new country, a move between social environments, or simply travel to another type of life.The most mon problems include: information overload, language barrier,generation gap, technology gap, skill inter

9、dependence, formulation dependency, homesickness (cultural), infinite regress (homesickness), boredom (job dependency), response ability (cultural skill set). There is no true way to entirely prevent culture shock, as individuals in any society are personally affected by cultural contrasts different

10、ly.Q3. How do Americans view time? Time is treated by Americans as if it were something almost real. People budget it, waste it, steal it, kill it, cut it, account for it; they also charge for it. 12、d teachers need to be aware that the ethnocentric attitudes of writers are precisely the way cultural conflict is encouraged. Why is understanding a culture always the others responsibility? Is it not possible that each culture could be made aware of different conventions? Both sides must work at ri

13、sing above cultural differences and be willing to promise and, in both cases, most likely neither side has access to the cultural conventions of the other so blaming is not the answer.Language Points: Paragraph 1:1. Americans believe no one stands still. (Para. 1)Meaning: Americans believe no one ke

14、eps motionless; everyone moves.Here stand means keep or stay in a particular position or state. In this sense, stand is followed by adjectives. (Para. 2)Meaning: Many people have a very strong feeling that life is short. Notice the use of sense in the following ex

17、amples: a sense of humor/duty/direction 幽默感/责任感/方向感4. We want every minute to count. (Para. 2)Meaning: We want every minute to be put into good use (since it is precious). Budget: v. plan carefully how much of something will be needed Eg. She has made so many mitments that she has to budget her time

18、 carefully. vi. plan the spending of money carefully. Eg. She budgeted for buying a new car.n. The amount of money a person or organization has to spend on something.Eg. It is important to balance this years budget. Account for :e.g. He has been asked to account for his conduct. call/bring sb. to ac

Meaning: .everyone is doing things in a hurry, because they are often under pressure to do so. In a rush: in a hurry. Eg. Why is she always in a hurry? 6. Racing

The child raced through his homework in order to watch the football match on TV.Abrupt adj.:1) (of behavior) rough2) sudden and unexpected an abrupt attitude 无礼的态度 an abrupt change of policy

21、 突然改变政策Paragraph 4: 7. They will miss the ritual interaction that goes with a weling cup of tea or coffeethat may be a convention in their own country. (Para. 4)Meaning: They will be sad because they will not have the usual exchanges (with the person who invited them) that go with a weling cup of te

Time

27、 to the matter at hand. b. Near in time or position. Eg this great day is at hand.Paragraph 7:5. This is due partly to the fact that the telephone service is superb here, whereas thepostal service is less efficient. (Para. 7)Meaning: This is partly because of the fact that the telephone service is e

28、xcellent here, but by contrast the postal service is not so good. due to: 因为, 由于Eg. Her absence was due to the storm. 由于风雨交加她没来。Whereas: conj. In contrast; while. It is often used to introduce a ment which contrasts with what is said in the main clause. Eg. Some students enjoy English class, whereas

29、 some hate them.Paragraph 8:6. Assignments are, consequently, given added weight by the passage of time. (Para. 8)Meaning: As a result, people think that assignments are gaining additional importance with the passing of time. The word weight here is used as an uncountable noun metaphorically to mean

30、 importance. More examples:an idea of great weight 一个很重要的观点Dont worry about what he thinks; his opinion doesnt carry much weight. 别担心他怎么想,他的意见没有多少影响。7. Usually, the more important a task is, the more capital, energy, and attention willbe poured into it in order to get it moving. (Para. 8)Meaning: Us

31、ually, if a job is more important, people will put in more money, effort, and attention in order to get it done.Take as: regard as. Eg. I will take the remark as a prase. petent: a. Having the necessary ability, skill, knowledge, etc. Eg. He is petent for the task.Fulfill: a. Do what one must do. Fu

32、lfill a duty Eg. I will fulfill my obligation to the rest of my ability. 我将尽我所能履行义务。b. Achieve something one wanted to do.Eg.
