It is the tallest structure in Paris and among the most recognized symbols of France. Named after its designer, engineer Gustave Eiffel, it is a prem
9、ier tourist destination. The tower stands 324 meters high. The total weight is 10100 tons. The number of steps to the summit has varied over the history of the tower, 1710 steps in 1889; 1920 steps in 1980s; 1665 steps today. History: the structure was built between 1887 and 1889 as the entrance arc
10、h for the worlds fair marking the centennial celebration of the French Revolution.Story: the tower was met with resistance from the public when it was built, many calling it an eyesore.Maintenance of the tower includes applying about 50 tons of paint every 7 years to protect it from rust.The Arc de
11、Triomphe is a monument in Paris that stands at the western end of the Champs-lyses. The monument stands over 51 meters in height and is 45 meters wide. History:Commissioned in 1806 by Napoleon, shortly after his victory at Austerlitz, it was not finished until 1836. There are four huge relief sculpt
12、ures at the bases of the four pillars. These commemorate The Triumph of 1810 ; Resistance , and Peace ; and The Departure of the Volunteers. Engraved around the top of the Arch are the names of major victories won during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic periods. The names of less important victories
13、, as well as those of 558 generals, are to found on the inside walls. Beneath the Arch is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and eternal flame commemorating the dead of the two world wars. Here every Armistice Day the President of the Republic lays a wreath. On 14 July - the French National Day, a mil
14、itary parade down the Champs Elyses begins here. For important occasions of state, and national holidays, a huge French tricolor is unfurled and hung from the vaulted ceiling inside of the Arch. Louvre (lvr) , foremost French museum of art, is located in Paris. The building was a royal fortress and
15、palace built by Philip II in the late 12th cent. Many rare paintings, sculptures and antiques came into the royal collections. The museum is famous for its enormous collection of Greek, Roman, and Egyptian antiquities, and for the superb old masters.A glass pyramid, designed by I.M.Pei and opened in
16、 1989, sits atop the entrance to this new space. At first the pyramid caused considerable controversy between critics who considered it a defacement of the museum and those judged it a continuation of the electicism of Parisian architecture; it has since become a nearly universally acclaimed landmar
17、k.Notre Dame de Paris (French for Our Lady of Paris, meaning the church in Paris dedicated to the Virgin Mary), often known simply as Notre Dame in English, is a gothic cathedral in Paris, with its main entrance to the west. Notre Dame de Paris was one of the first gothic cathedrals, and was built t
18、hroughout the Gothic period. Its sculptures and stained glass show the heavy influence of naturalism, giving them a more secular look that was lacking from earlier Romanesque designs. French Wine: France is among the foremost producers of wine in the world. The best-known vineyards are in Burgundy,
19、Champagne, the Rhone and Loire valleys, and the Bordeaux region.All common styles of wine red, ros, white (dry, semi-sweet and sweet), sparkling and fortified are produced in France. In most of these styles, the French production ranges from cheap and simple versions to some of the worlds most famou

An exception is French fortified wines, which tend to be relatively unknown outside France.Quality levels and prices varies enormously, and some wines are made for immediate consumption while other are meant for long-time cellaring.In many respects, French wines have more o
