3、museums are reaching out to new audiences ,particularly the young , the poor , and the less educatedmembers of the population. As a result , attendance isincreasing.More and more , museums directors are realizing thatpeople learn best when they can somehow become part of whatthey are seeing. In many

4、 science museums , for example ,there are no guided tours. The visitor is encouraged to touch ,listen , operate , and experiment so as to discoverscientific principles for himself. He can have the experienceof operating a spaceship or a computer. He can experimentwith glass blowing and paper making.

5、 The purpose is not onlyto provide fun but also to help people feel at home in theworld of science. The theory is that people who do notunderstand science will probably fear it , and those who fearscience will not use it to best advantage. Many museums nowprovide educational services and children s

6、departments. Inaddition to the usual displays , they also offer filmshowings and dance programs. Instead of being places that one“should ” visit , they are places to enjoy.One cause of all these changes is the increase in wealthand leisure time. Another cause is the rising percentage ofyoung people

7、in the population. Many of these young peopleare college students or college graduates. They are bettereducated than their parents. They see things in a new anddifferent way. They are not content to stand and look atworks of are; they want art they can participate in. The sameis true of science and

8、history. In the US , certain groupswho formerly were too poor to care about anything beyond thebasic needs of daily life are now becoming curious about theworld around them. The young people in these groups , likeyoung people in general , have benefited from a bettereducation than their parents rece

9、ived. All these groups , andthe rest of the population as well , have been influenced bytelevision , which has taught them about other places andother times.The effect of all this has been to change existingmuseums and to encourage the building of new ones. In the USand Canada alone , there are now

10、more than 6 ,000 museums,almost twice as many as there were 25 years ago. About halfof them are devoted to history , and the rest are evenlydivided between the arts and sciences. The number of visitors ,according to the American Association of museums , has risento more than 700 million a year.In fa

Admission to museums has alwaysbeen either free or very inexpensive , but now some museumsare charging entrance fees for the first time or raisingtheir prices.
