Madam President Faust, members f the Harvard Crpratin and the Bard f verseers, faculty, family, friends, and, mst imprtantly, tdays graduates,尊敬的Faust校长,哈佛集团的各位成员,监管理事会的各位理事,各位老师,各位家长,各位朋友,以及最重要的各位毕业生同学,Thank yu fr letting me share this wnderful day with yu. I

2、 am nt sure I can live up t the high standards f Harvard Cmmencement speakers. Lastyear, J.K. Rwling, the billinaire nvelist, wh started as a classics student, graced thispdium. The year befre, Bill Gates, the mega-billinaire philanthrpist and cmputer nerdstd here. Tday, sadly, yu have me. I am nt w

3、ealthy, but at least I am a nerd. I am grateful t receive an hnrary degree frm Harvard, an hnr that means mre t methan yu might care t imagine. Yu see, I

4、 was the academic black sheep f my family. Mylder brther has an M.D./Ph.D. frm MIT and Harvard while my yunger brther has a lawdegree frm Harvard. When I was awarded a Nbel Prize, I thught my mther wuld besatisfied. Nt s. When I called her n the mrning f the annuncement, she replied, Thatsnice, but

5、when are yu ging t visit me net. Nw, as the last brther with a degree frmHarvard, maybe, at last, she will be satisfied.

Anther difficulty with giving a Harvard cmmencement address is that sme f yu maydisapprve f the fact that I have brrwed material frm previus speeches. I ask that yufrgive me fr tw reasns. First, i

Inscience, it is imprtant t be the first persn t make a discvery, but it is even mre imprtantt be the last persn t make that discvery. Secnd, authr

那么为什么毕业典礼的演说者,就不适用同样的标准呢?I als want t pint ut the irny f speaking t graduates f an institutin that wuld haverejected me, had I the chutzpah t apply. I am married t Dean Jean, the frmer dean fadmissins at Stanfrd. She assures me that she wuld

She never rejected applicants; her letters stated that we are unable t ffer yuadmissin. I have difficulty understanding the difference. After all, deans f admissins fhighly

11、selective schls are in reality, deans f rejectin. Clearly, I have a lt t learn abutmarketing.

My address will fllw the classical snata frm f cmmencement addresses. The firstmvement, just presented, were light-hearted remarks. Thinsists funslicited advice, which is rarely valued, seldm remembered, never fllwed. As scar Wildesaid, The nly thing t d with gd

T yur fellwstudents wh have added immeasurably t yur educatin during thse late night discussins, hug them. Als, f curse, thank Ha

Leave the change n the table. In yur cllabratins, always remember that credit is nt a cnserved quantity. In a successful cl

16、labratin,everybdy gets 90 percent f the credit.

Jimmy Stewart, as Elwd P. Dwd in the mvie Harvey gt it eactly right. He said: Yearsag my mther used t say t me, In this wrld, Elwd, yu

Yu may qute me n that.

My third piece f advice is as fllws: As yu begin this new stage f yur lives, fllw yurpassin. If yu dnt have a passin, dnt be satisfied until yu find ne. Life is t shrt tg thrugh it withut caring deeply abut smething. When I was yur age, I was incrediblysingle-minded in my gal t be a physicist.

20、 After cllege, I spent eight years as a graduatestudent and pstdc at Berkeley, and then nine years at Bell Labs. During that my time, mycentral fcus and prfessinal jy was physics.

Here is my final piece f advice. Pursuing a persnal passin is imprtant, but it shuld nt beyur nly gal. When yu are ld and gray, and lk back n yur life, yu will want t be prudf what yu have dne. The surce f that pride wnt be the thin

22、gs yu have acquired r therecgnitin yu have received. It will be the lives yu have tuched and the difference yuhave made. After nine years at Bell labs, I decided t leave that warm, c

Bell Labs, t qute what was said abut MaryPppins, was practically perfect in every way, but I wanted t leave behind smething mrethan scientific articles. I wanted t teach and give birth t my wn set f scientific children.

Ted Geballe, a friend and distinguished clleague f mine at Stanfrd, wh als went frmBerkeley t Bell Labs t Stanfrd years earlier, described ur mtives best:我在斯坦福大学有一个好友兼杰出同事Ted Geballe。

The best part f wrking at a university is the students. They cme in fresh, enthusiastic, pen t ideas, unscarred by the battles f life. They dnt realize it, but theyre the recipients fthe best ur sciety can ffer. If a mind is ever free t be creative, thats t

Then, I beginlearning frm them.

My students, pst dctral fellws, and the yung researchers wh wrked with me at Bell Labs,Stanfrd, and Berkeley have been etrardinary. ver 30 frmer grup members are nwprfessrs, many at the best research institutins in t

Even nw, in rare mments n weekends, the remaining members fmy biphysics grup meet with me in the ether wrld f cyberspace.

I began teaching with the idea f giving back; I received mre than I gave. This brings me tthe final mvement f this speech. It begins with a stry abut an etrardinary scientificdiscvery and a new dilemma that it pses. Its a call t arms and abut making a difference.

In the last several decades, ur climate has been changing. Climate change is nt new: theEarth went thrugh si ice ages in the past 600,000 years. Hwever, recent measurementsshw that the climate has begun t change rapidly.

These changes are due t an increase in carbndiide put int the atmsphere since the beginning f the Industrial Revlutin. The Earth haswarmed up by rughly 0.8 degrees C

33、elsius since the beginning f the Revlutin. There isalready apprimately a 1 degree rise built int the system, even if we stp all greenhusegas emissins tday. Why? It will take decades t warm up the deep ceans befre thetemperature reaches a new equilibrium.

If the wrld cntinues n a business-as-usual path, t

35、he Intergvernmental Panel n ClimateChange predicts that there is a fifty-fifty chance the temperature will eceed 5 degrees by theend f this century. This increase may nt sund like much, but let me remind yu that duringthe last ice age, the wrld was nly 6 degrees clder. During this time, mst f Canada

36、 and theUnited States dwn t hi and Pennsylvania were cvered year rund by a glacier. A wrld 5degrees warmer will be very different. The change will be s rapid that many species, includingHumans, will have a hard time adapting. Ive been tld fr eample, that, in a much warmerwrld, insects were bigger. I

37、 wnder if this thing buzzing arund is a precursr. We

The climate prblem is tnsequence f ur success. The life we enjy may nt be within the reach f the develping wrld, but it iswithin sight, and they want what we have.

I became the directr f theLawrence Berkeley Natinal Labratry, in part because I wanted t enlist sme f the bestscientific minds t help battle against clim

I was there nly fur and a half years, the shrtest serving directr in the 78-year histry f the Lab, but when I left, a number fvery eciting energy institutes at the Berkeley Lab and UC Berkeley had been established.

I am etremely privileged t be part f the bama administratin. If there ever was a timet help steer America and the wrld twards a path f sustainable energy, nw is the time. Themessage the President is delivering is

The task ahead is daunting, but we can and will succeed. We knw sme f the answers already. There are

50、 immediate and significant savings in energyefficiency and cnservatin. Energy efficiency is nt just lw-hanging fruit; it is fruit lyingn the grund. We have the pprtunity t lead in develpment f a new, industrialrevlutin.

May yu prsper, may yu help preserve and saveur planet fr yur children, and all future children f the wrld.
