I no longer care for my daughter and she is to leave my castle a poor woman. She will have none of my riches when she marries

9、 you.B: That was not our agreement, sir.L: Well, it is now.B: I am sorry but I cannot marry her under these circumstances.L: Fine, then dont. And you, France. Are you willing to marry this daughter whom I hate?F: I dont understand. Yesterday Cordelia was your favorite. She was the child of your old

10、age, the best, the dearest of your daughters. She must have done something most terrible to turn you against her. C: Your Majesty. I have committed no murder or any other dishonorable act. It is simply that I could not find the words to tell my father how much I love him.L: It would have been better

11、 if you had never been born than you had displeased me so much.F: Is this her only fault? Why, then I shall marry her and take her to France where she will be my queen.L: Take her, for she is no daughter of e Burgundy. I do not want to look any longer at her face.N: The King and Burgundy leave toget

12、her with the Dukes o Albany and Cornwall.C: Sisters, goodbye. 23、ightR=Regan)LISTENING TEXTN: The Duke of Kent, disguised as Lears servant, Caius, travels to Regans castle before King Lear to tell his second daughter that he will soon be arriving. Unfortunately, Kent meets Regans servant outside the gates of the castle. They argue and Kent beats him with the fiat

24、 side of his sword. Regans husband, the Duke of Cornwall punishes Kent by.placing him in the stocks. When Lear arrives, he finds Kent in the stocks, outside the castle gates. Lear enters with one of his knights.L: I wonder why my servant Caius didnt return after he delivered my message to Regan?KN:

25、I dont know. We should have met up with him by now.K: Welcome, Your Majesty.L: Caius? Are you playing a joke on me?K: No, my Lord.L: Then what man has done this to you?K: Man and woman, my Lord. It was your daughter and son-in-law who had me put in these stocks.L: No, no, they wouldnt dare do such a

26、 thing!K: Yes, my Lord.L: Never!K: I swear its true.L: This is terrible! They cannot do this to my personal servantl Wheres this daughter?K: Within the castle with her husband.N: At first Regan and her husband refuse to speak to Lear. They say they have been travelling all night and are too tired. H

27、owever, when King Lear tells their servant that he will go into their bedroom to talk to them, Regan and Cornwall come to the entrance of the castle. Regan and Cornwall enter with some soldiers.R: Its good to seeyou, Your Majesty.L: Oh, Regan, you wont believe how unkind your sister is. I can hardly

28、 talk about it.R: Im sure shes notas bad as all that.L: Shes a monster.R: Father, I really think you should return to Goneril and apologize.L: Never! She told me to get rid of half my troops. Shes an unnatural daughter. Let her go to hell!R: I advise you to do as Goneril requests, and return to her

29、castle. You cant stay here, I dont have enough food for even fifty soldiers. I dont know whyyou need so many, anyway. Even twenty-five are too many.N: Before long Goneril arrives at the castle too and the sisters call Lear a silly old man and tell him he is selfish to keep so many soldiers with him.

30、 They tell him he should keep just a few old men with him and tell all the rest to go home. Lear angrily tells his daughters he will live in neither of their houses. He rushes away from the castle into the countryside just as a storm is beginning. Regan locks the doors of the castle behind him. (the

38、our Majesty, would you like to lie down and rest?L: No, no, not yet. First I must see Goneril in prison.N: Lear points at a stool.L: Here she is. This is the daughter who kicked the king, her poor father.N: He now points at a chair.L: And heres another. She has a heat of stone. Quick, quick, dont le

39、t her escape.K: He thinks the furniture is his daughters! The king grows mad.G: Its no wonder with all thats happened to him. He was once a great king and now he has nothing - no home, no friends, no daughters, no soldiers. N: A servant rushes into the room, bows to everyone and then whispers in Glo

40、ucesters ear. (Scene: Hurried footsteps come into the room and stop. )G: Excuse me. (Sound of whispering) The devils! Ive just been told that there is a plan to kim the king. Hes not safe here. Quickly, take the King to Dover where the Queen of France, Cordelia, his daughter, has just arrived with a

41、n army. He will be safe with her.N: They leave, holding Lear between them. Goneril, Regan and their husbands prepare to march to Dover to fight the French.
