1、 When a loved one passes away, we often use photographs as a way of keeping that persons memory alive. One Ohio family took the process a step further, creating a unique set of photos that serves as both a touchstone of the past and a reminder of how life moves forward. In 2011, 31-year-old schoolte

2、acher Ali Nunery passed away from a rare form of lung cancer, leaving behind her husband Ben and a 1-year-old daughter named Olivia.This November, after two years on a rollercoaster of emotions, as Ben described it, he and Olivia were ready to move out of the Cincinnati home theyd shared with Ali. 3、ut before they left, Ben wanted a way to remember the happy times theyd shared in the house. So he asked his sister-in-law Melanie Pace, a professional photographer, to take photos of him and his now 3-year-old daughter in their home.I was just really looking for a way to say farewell to the house,

4、and have some things that Olivia and I can have to.remember the house, Ben said.Pace, who shot Ben and Alis original wedding photos in 2009, was able to recreate the images with Ben and Olivia, including one of the father and daughter in a doorway to mimic the photo Ben had once taken with her mothe

5、r.It immediately brought up memories of being there the first time, he said. In a lot of ways, it felt like Ali was there, and doing that with Olivia I felt a closeness with both of them.Pace and her husband, who is also a photographer and helped out with the shoot, posted the photos to their blog,

6、and the beautiful and poignant images soon attracted attention, as even those unfamiliar with the Nunerys and their story were moved by the photos and story.I hope that people can see it as evidence of a love that Ali and I shared that is still very deep, and that love carries on, and it doesnt die,

8、lf better, to find out what you really want.”As soon as New Zealands government announced its plan to offer 1,000 working holiday visas to Chinese residents a year in 2010, Liu, then 27, applied.Back then, Liu had worked as a reporter for the Kunming Daily for five years, after graduating from a tou

9、rism management major at Central South University of Forestry and Technology.Rural tasteLiu arrived in New Zealand in December and was impressed by the summer Christmas.“Many fruits are ready to harvest, so its easy to find a job in theorchards before getting there. Since New Zealand is an agricultu

10、ral country, working in rural areas helps you understand the country better,” says Liu.The most important thing, according to Liu, is to live independently. He needed to balance work and travel, because on a working holiday visa youre only allowed to stay in a job for a maximum of three months. So w

11、hen Liu had nearly finished a job, it was time to think about what to do next.Variety of experienceDifferent to Lius experience, Wu Fei tried many different jobs.Wu was one of the first people to get a working holiday visa in 2010. After graduating from a physics major at Fudan University, he travel

He worked as an assistant for a hunter, a chef in a restaurant, a cleaner in a university, even as an actor in a prison.“Theres a haunted house performance in a disused prison in Napier every week. My job was to wear white clothes and scare people in a prison cell. I hid un

13、der a bed and came out just when tourists turned to leave and patted the last person on the shoulder,” says Wu.What impressed him most was the lifestyle of the local people. “They dont pursue happiness by shopping or going to parties. Instead, they like going outdoors with their families. This simpl

14、e happiness helps them find inner peace, but its hard to do that in a metropolis in China,” says Wu.Embrace local cultureBut it was hard for Liu to communicate with the locals at the beginning, as they spoke with strong accents and there were big cultural differences.“I tried my best to overcome the

15、se problems. When you decide to go abroad, you must immerseyourself in an unfamiliar environment and solve problems on your own. I think thats what makes such a trip special,” says Liu.We Chinese are not big huggers. A handshake or a pat on the shoulder is enough to convey our friendship or affectio

16、n to one another. So when our newly-acquainted Western friends reach out in preparation for a hug, some of us feel awkward.Many questions go through our head. Where should I put my arms? Under their armpits or around their neck? What distance should I maintain? Should our chests touch?Its even more

17、difficult with friends from some European countries. Should I kiss them on the cheek while hugging? Which side? Or is it both cheeks? Which side should I start on?But it isnt just people from cultures that emphasize a reservedness in expressing physical intimacy who find hugging confusing. Hugs can

18、cause discomfort or even distress in people who value their personal space.In a recent article for The Wall Street Journal, US psychologist Peggy Drexler said that although the US remains a “medium touch” culture “more physically demonstrativethan Japan, where a bow is the all-purpose hello and good

19、bye, but less demonstrative than Latin or Eastern European cultures, where hugs are robust and can include a kiss on both cheeks”, Americans do seem to be hugging more.From politicians to celebrities, hugs are given willy-nilly to friends, strangers and enemies alike; and the public has been quick t

20、o pick up the practice.Public figures know that nothing projects likeability like a good hug. US First Lady Michelle Obama has put her arms around icy foreign leaders like Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and the Queen of England, on the latter occasion breaching royal protocol.Pop superstar L

21、ady Gaga is also a hug enthusiast, telling her fans that “I will always, always, try my very best to wrap my arms around you when I meet you.”But not all are grateful to be embraced, even by the most influential and famous. To them, any hug is offensive if its not sincere.Amanda Hess, writing for US

22、 magazine Slate, says public figures should stop imposing hugs on everyone they meet. For them, a hug is rarely a gesture of sincere fellowship, compassion or affection. Its all part of a show. Hugs are falsely intimate power plays used by public figures to establish their social dominance over thos

23、e in their grasp.Cecilia Walden, a British journalist writing for The Telegraph who lives in New York, holds the same opinion. “Power-hugging”, as she calls it, is “an assault dressed up as kindness”.
