Researchers from the Institute for Building Materials have studied salt damage in greater depth and can now predict weathering processes more accurately.Historic stone building materials are tourist magnets. These cultural assets all have one thing in common: th

Cement, for example, a component of concrete, always contains gypsum and alkali sulfates, both of which are salts. Building materials can also be infi

38、ltrated(渗透)by salt from the environment, or by way of the atmospheric pollutant sulfur dioxide.Damage can also be caused by de-icing salt and seawater spray that accumulates on the surface of the buildings. If these salts are dissolved by rain, the saline liquid can enter the building materials thro

39、ugh pores and cracks, causing parts of the stonework to crumble away(破裂).An experiment showed that the greater the super saturation(过度饱和), the greater the salts destructive potential. Temperature also played a role: in cycles in which the temperature never fell below 25, it took an average of four c

When the temperature dropped to 3, one cycle was enough. “Although these wet and dry cycles play a part, super saturation is the most important factor,” explains chemist Caruso.With this controlled experiment, the researchers have been able to describe the phenomena of
