1、Abstract Earthquake is born with the earth, so every day; we live under the shade of it. Because of the power of its destruction, we humans dont have ability to prevent it occurring. So from start to finish, we are always hiding. And we are so small before its cold face! In the history of human bein

2、gs, there are many big earthquakes which causing serious loss. Like the Messina Earthquake in Italy, Guangdong Earthquake in Japan and the famous Wenchuan Earthquake in China. For centuries, we are totally the slaves. However, we nerve stop the research of this theme. From the seismographs productio

3、n, we have been finding ways to fight against this disaster. Fortunately, we at least have some knowledge of it. We cant prevent it occurring, but if we can forecast and then take measures to face the reality, and even we cant forecast it like the weather report, we can strengthen the awareness of p

4、rotecting ourselves and also helping others. Then, its not fearful. So, a good knowledge of earthquake is essential. Do all of us have a good knowledge of this topic? To find the answers, our group has an investigation among the undergraduates in HIT. We hope through the investigation, we can draw t

5、he frame of Chinese undergraduates knowledge in this field generally. In fact, we dont play well, so we hope we can enhance the value of the earthquake. For the basic request, we should know how to protect ourselves.IntroductionOn May 12nd 2008, when most people were in their happy dream at noon, a

6、powerful 8.0-magnitude（里氏8.0级） earthquake had struck off the ground of Wenchuan County, Sichuan province. In an instant, the ground was shaking; the mountains and rivers were shifting; everything was in a state of devastation; countless lives were at the make-or-break point（悬于一线） This is the most ru

7、inous and widest influencing earthquake since the foundation of China, causing almost seventy thousand peoples death and about twenty thousand peoples disappearance, the injured people even up to three hundred and seventy five thousand. The direct financial loss of this earthquake was also up to 845

8、 billion yuan. Therefore, earthquake, in the situation of worse environment and shorter resources modern society, is still the head of natural disaster, beyond the flood, the drought, the typhoon and so on.Since the Wenchuan earthquake in 2008, there has being several big earthquake breaking out one

9、 after another around the world. For instance, on 13rd January of this year, a 7.3-magnitude earthquake occurred in Haiti; before long, a powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake happened in Chile on 27th February; recently, another 7.1-magnitude earthquake took place in Yushu county Qinghai province, on 1

10、4th April. Every time when earthquake occurred, it would bring about weighty financial loss and personnel injuries and deaths, which also set many barriers on the way of development of each countrys economy. The harm caused by earthquake is major in four inspects:First is the damage of nature. Becau

11、se the landform（地形） has changed a lot after earthquake, following, the plant and the weather of this district would change.Second is social influence. Earthquake will being people in a panic. If the government doesnt comfort them in time, it may affect social harmony.Third is financial loss. And the

12、 forth is secondary disaster of earthquake（地震次生灾害） like pestilence（瘟疫） and seismic sea wave（地震海啸）.After Wenchuan earthquake occurred, the government has taken some effective measures to reduce the damage of earthquake. For example, to advance the ability of forecasting earthquake, to found the speci

13、al fund for natural disaster and to improve the national consciousness of quakeproof（防震） and saving oneself.As undergraduate, we should all actively improve our own ability and the sense of responsibility. Consequently, it is rather necessary to know some knowledge about earthquake, to memorize some

14、 basic ways of saving oneself and to master some essential skills of rescuing. Therefore, in a desperate situation, we can not only save our own life, but also give a hand to others, bringing hope to their lives.We, absorbing the knowledge in book and growing, shoulder the extremely important respon

15、sibility in the construction of China. Our society needs comprehensive（全方面） and high quality talents. Our countrys future is in our hands. For this reason, we ought to devote ourselves without hesitation when our country is in danger. Do what we can do and do what we should do. Our group takes this

16、topic with a strong curiosity on how much does the undergraduate know about earthquake and what they will do in an earthquake. We are also interested in what they have done for the people in the disaster and how they think of the education in this field. At the same time, those students who take par

17、t in this project will surly improve their knowledge and pay more attention to earthquake. We hope that we can get some conclusions from this project, and give some practical advice for the popularization（普及） of the knowledge of earthquake as well.MethodsInstrument: We use the questionnaire which is

18、 made up by 15 questions to investigate the students. These questions contain some simple knowledge. The consideration about Wenchuan Earthquake is involved. Whats more, we just want to know whether we are all well-prepared for the imaging coming disaster. What also interests us is that what the cit

19、izens think about the degree of education regarding to the seismic by our nation. Also, we had considered the areas of the students. They are from different pro

29、vinces and cities. Then we will carefully analyze the data and they can give what we want. Procedures: To make up the questionnaire. We collected many data. Then we gathered the questions .So the 15 questions are carefully collected by every member but not one in our group through searching the inte

30、rnet or reading the books on the earthquake.Data collection We totally investigated 90 people who are undergraduate students from Collage of Space, Collage of Electrical Engineering, Collage of Civil Engineering, Collage of Computer Engineering, College of Science, and College of Architecture in HIT

31、. The number of females and males is the same and they are all juniors. Also, they are all from different areas. In such way, we can make sure that the data is credible and comprehensive. Findings Chart 1 showed the correct rate of question No.1 to No.5. From chart 1, we can find that question No.2

32、was correctly answered in high rate, followed by question NO.1 in rate of 61%. On the contrary, there were only 16% of the participants could get correct answer on question 3, of which the correct answer rate is the lowest among the 5 answers; same as question No.3, only 32% of the questionnaire kne

33、w the correct answer of question No.5; and when asked question No.4 just half percent gave their correct choice. We just want to show you what we have found manly through histograms and pie charts on each question. In our questionnaire, question No.8, No.9, No.10, and No.15 focusing on the attitude

34、of the people towards the earthquake. It concludes what you would do when earthquake happens, or after earthquake happens. 8. The first time everyone will choose the correct way to protect themselves.9.Most people choose to support the masses of the earthquake. And almost no one is indifferent.10.Di

35、fferent people care about the different news of the earthquake.15.Most people are concerned about the problems post disaster reconstructionQuestion No.11, no.12, No.13, and No.14 are mainly about peoples attitude towards earthquake protection and some opinions on if the technology of earthquake is e

36、nough or not.13.The number of people who have received the earthquake protection is equal to the number of people who havent.14.A large number of people think that education of earthquake protection is not enough. It shows that education of earthquake protection should be increase.We should say that

37、 the result have two sides. What make us happy is that most people know how to do when earthquake happen. On the contrary, the earthquake protection and the education of earthquake protection is not enough.Analysis and Discussion: After collecting the data, we find many problems. Some are even out o

38、f our imagination. For the simple common sense, only about half of the investigators can get the right answers. And for Question 3, only 15 students are clear. For the measures to take when the earthquake happens, many people cant stay calm and dont know how to act properly or save themselves or the

39、ir families. So we are suspicious if the education is enough in our land. What will the investigators think? Then we get the answers in Question 14. We are shocked! Because almost all the participants claim that its not enough for our government to educate on us public on the knowledge of earthquake

40、. Thats maybe the problems of the low right rate of the questions. But on the other hand, we find that the faults cant be easily attributable to the government. We also have the responsibility. From Question 11, we find that less than half of the participants dont concern about the earthquake in dai

41、ly life. Also, we are not well-prepared for the accident. The good news is that when it comes to the love, we are all willing to help the people in the disaster. When the Wenchuan Earthquake happens, all the investigators contribute to the people in the disaster area in different ways. And most of t

42、hem choose to donate money and goods. When they concern the earthquake, they tend to care about the lives that are rescued and the progress of the rescuing. So life is valuable. We all come to the point. Since Yushu Earthquake happened, we suffered such a horrible disaster again, we hope our compatr

43、iots will overcome the difficulties and be fine soon. We dont know when and where the disaster may attack us, so everyone should take actions to strengthen their knowledge and know how to deal with it. And also for the society and our government, they must make some changes.Conclusion We dont have a

44、 good knowledge through our investigation. So thats the problem. Imagine that one day the disaster really happens just around us and we dont know how to protect ourselves properly, what a big loss we will have. Since the theme relates our lives, what reasons do we have to avoid knowing about it? The

45、n we try to find some reasons. On one hand, for the students themselves, maybe some say they just dont have time, they are so busy every day. They have much work to do, they have many people to meet, and they have lots of lectures to listen to and the rest. But we should say, these are just their ex

46、cuses. Because time is equal to everyone, and some students do a good job. We think this awareness is the basis of our beautiful life and we cant lack it. They dont have time so they dont concern much about this area. Some even dont care it at all. Then this is not about time but the attitude and aw

47、areness. On the other hand, our investigators arent satisfied about the education of nation. In other words, our government should take the responsibility. We are sorry that our government says they have taken much energy in this field. But if this has an effect is another question. Whats more, our

48、society doesnt well prepare for the sudden coming of this disaster. Only 40 investigators have accepted the earthquake survival training. Unfortunately, some even dont know what to prepare. So we dont have a good atmosphere, and we maybe not safe in this situation. As a result, we cant handle this p

49、roblem and only can pray for our lives. In this case, we cant be like this anymore, and we must take actions. Here are some suggestions. For the students, first, we should strengthen our awareness about earthquake, change our mind and pay more attention to it. Then, we can learn more about it by rea

50、ding the magazines, watching TV or searching the internet. Last, we should concern about the governments announcement now and then and cooperate with them for the popularization of this knowledge. For the government and the society, you should take some more effective measures to the public awarenes

51、s of this knowledge. Also, avoid being an armchair strategist; you should put your policies into practice and let the public really learn something useful. Through the investigation, we also find that everyone is willing to help the people in the disaster. They express their love by different ways.

52、Currently speaking, we are a united nation! We help each other and we pray for each other, we are just a big family. Our group is happy to get this result. On the whole, we are not alone if we have such a disaster because we love each other, but we must strengthen ourselves to fight against this disaster.
