INTRODUCTIONThisreportaimsatthecultureshockwhichmeanspeoplesfeelingsandbehaviorswhentheymovefromoneculturetoanother(Brick,1991).Accordingtothefourstagesofthecultureshock(Brick,1991),

2、ourgroupmadeaquestionnaireaboutthesituationofstudyingorlivingabroadandinterviewed45studentswhomwereselectedatrandomintheWilliamBuildingandthelibraryofMiddlesexUniversityandnotfromtheUK.Inthisreport,themethodologyisdescribedandtheresultsofthequestionnairearegiven.Then,wewillanalyzethedataandexplainou

3、rresultsbyusingtheoriesfromBrick(1991)andBoddyandPatton(1998).Afterthesectionofanalysisanddiscussion,theconclusionoftheresearchandthewholeworkofourgroupwillbemade.2. METHODOLOGYOurteamconsistofthreemembers.Weusedquestionnairetoobtaininformationaboutcultureshock.Weconstituteddifferentkindsofquestions

4、.Firstlywestartedquestionnairewithidentifyingpeople,whichnationalitytheyareandhowoldtheyare.AndthenwelearnedHowlongtheyhavebeeninLondonandwhattheirfirstimpressionoftheirdestinationwas.Iftheyexpresstheirfirstimpressionasexcited,welearnedwhathappened,effectingthembadly.Thisquestionisrelatedsecondstage

5、ofcultureshock,depressionstage.Wefocusedontheproblemsandasked,whatthemostdifficultproblemtheydealed.Untilthirdstage,theymusthavefeltcultureshockalot.Inthispoint,wewantedtofindouthowtheyrespondtothecultureshock.Aftertheylivedcertaintimeinnewcultureornewcountry,weexaminedwhetherpozitivesituationsarose

6、.Generallytheyhavepositiveimprovementsaftertheygetusedtolivinginnewculture.Thisimprovementisrelatedtoadjustmentstage.Aftertheadjustmentsatge,westressedsomequestionstotellhowtheyreachtoacceptencestage.Inthiscase,weaskedhowtheyspendtheirsparetimeandhowmuchtheyknowaboutUKculture.Finallyweexaminedthatth

7、eremusthavebeensomeadjustmenttodecreaseintensityofcultureshockandadaptationperiod.Althoughwedeductedsomequestions,ourquestionnaireseemedtoolongaccordingtointerviewees.Thoselongquestionsandanswerscausedthemtoloosetheirattention.Wemotivatedthemtofocusonourquestionnairealot.Ontheotherhand,somepeopledid

8、ntwanttoallocatetheirtimeforquestionnaire.Moreover,someofthemrepliedtothequestionswithoutreadingexactly.Thesesituationscausetowasteofourtime.Eachteammembermadeaninterviewwith15people.Finallyweobtained45numberofinterviews.WeexaminedourinterviewsinExel.Weconstitutedgraphesandpiecharts.Accordingtoobjec

9、tivedata,weconcludedcultureshock.3. FINDINGSThesurveywasdoneafterinterviewing45studentsselectedatrandomofstudentsatMiddlesexUniversity(MDX)toansweraquestionnaireaboutthecultureshock.Oftheinterviewees,foundmultiplesinternationalsuchasThailand,China,Vietnamarethemostintervieweesfromthisreportandthemos

10、tcommonofstudentshadaffectedbycultureshockincludinglanguageproblem,weatherandthedifficulttocontactwiththeirfamily.Ontheotherhand,94%ofstudentsfoundthatafterhavebeenlivinghereforalmostoneyeartheyfelttheirEnglishimprovedand27studentsfoundwhentheyfirstarrivedcouldadapttothereturncultureeasilyandontheot

11、herhand18studentsfeltalittledifficulttoadapted.4. DISCUSSIONANDANALYSISTheresultsoffirstquestionaboutnationalitiesshowsthatallthestudentswhoweinterviewedcamefromdifferentculturesandlanguageenvironmentsfromtheseoftheUK,sotheymustfeltthecultureshock,andthiswasbedemonstratedfromthefollowingquestions.Ab

12、out60%ofthesamplethoughtthattheyfeltexcitedthefirsttimetheyarrivedintheUKwhilethefirstimpressionof30%oftheintervieweesisnormal.ThosepercentagesillustratesthefirststageofBrick(1991),theeuphoria,andshowsthatmostofthestudentsthoughtthatstudyingabroadisinterestingandcouldbethebeginningoftheirnewliveswhe

13、ntheywerenewintheUK.Afterthefirstimpression,allsamplefoundsomeproblemssuchaslocalfood(42%),localweather(53%),physicallyvulnerable(2%),economicproblems(2%)anddifferentreligion,butaccordingtotheresultsoftheseventhquestion,two-thirdsoftheintervieweesthoughtthatthemostdifficultproblemtodealwithislanguag

14、eproblem,16%ofthesamplethoughtthatislackoflifeskillssuchascookingorwashingandtheothersthoughtthatislivingfarfromfriendsandfamily.Theentiresamplealwaysmissedtheirfamiliesandfriendsandwasoftenincontactwiththem(everydayfor67%,3-4timesaweekfor18%,onceaweekfor13%and2-3timesamonthforonly2%).AccordingtoBri

15、ck(1991),theybecamebeinginthedepressionstage,theyfoundthatmanythingsseemdifficult,andbegantofeellonely,frustratedandhopeless.Then,thestudentsseemedtoenterthethirdstage,theadjustment.Thethirteenthquestionillustratesthatthestudentstriedtodecreaseintensityofcultureshockandadaptationperiod,afew(22%)prep

16、aredconversationtypedependsonculturalbackground,asignificantmajority(47%)learntbackgroundofnewculturefrommedia(e.g.TV,newspaper)andsome(31%)metpeoplewithdifferentculturebackgroundespeciallyduringnegotiating.Andthedatashowsthat,aftersometimelater,studentsfoundsomenewandgoodsituationsuchasalmostallthe

17、studentsthoughttheirEnglishimproved.Thatmeanstheybegantoadapttothelocalcultureandthoughtthisplaceisnotsobadandwantedtounderstandsomeoftheircustoms.Inadditiom,differentstudentshavedifferentcharacters,sothatsomemayliketostayaloneandothersliketomakefriendswitheachother.Forexample,24%ofthesamplelikestay

18、ingathometospendtheirsparetime,24%prefergoingoutsideofLondon,36%likemeetingoldfriendsandtheothersprefermakingnewfriends.Absolutely,ifsomeonelikesmakingfriendswithotherpeople,heorshemayadapttothelocalculturemoreeasily.5. CONCLUSIONInconclusion，astheinformationabove,thepurposeofthisreportistoresearcht
