24、duction Higher education in the United States began with the founding of Harvard College in Massachusetts in 1636.Now America has a large number of universities.According to the 1994 Carnegie classification of Institutions of Higher Education,the United States has 3,595 institutions of higher educat

25、ion.They include 125 research universities,111 doctoral universities,529 masters comprehensive universities and colleges,637 liberal arts colleges,1471 junior colleges and 722 specialized institutions.Continues Research universities are the best universities.They offer a full range of program.They g

26、ive high priority to research and award doctoral degrees.A research university normally receives many millions of dollars from the federal government each year.Doctoral universities also provide a full range of programs leading to a BA(Bachelor of Arts)degree and through the doctorate.But they award
