What were these four years at Harvard for? President Faust, you must have learned something since you graduated from college exactly 40 years

12、 ago?” (Forty years. Ill say it out loud since every detail of my life and certainly the year of my Bryn Mawr degree now seems to be publicly available. And I have been trying to figure out how I might answer and, perhaps more intriguingly, why you were asking.在某种限度上,在过去的一年里你们

Then the questions continued when I had lunch at Kirkland House, dinner at Leverett, when I met with students in

15、 my office hours, even with some recent graduates I encountered abroad. The first thing you asked me about wasnt the curriculum or advising or faculty contact or even student space. In fact, it wasnt even alcohol policy. Instead, you repeatedly asked me: Why are so many of us going to Wall Street? W

You may know that when he was asked why he robbed banks, he replied, “Because thats where the money is.” Professors Claudia G

18、oldin and Larry Katz, whom many of you have encountered in your economics concentration, offer a not dissimilar answer based on their study of student career choices since the seventies. They find it notable that, given the very high pecuniary rewards in finance, many students nonetheless still choo

19、se to do something else. Indeed, 37 of you have signed on with Teach for America; one of you will dance tango and work in dance therapy in Argentina; another will be engaged in agricultural development in Kenya; another, with an honors degree in math, will study poetry; another will train as a pilot

20、 with the USAF; another will work to combat breast cancer. Numbers of you will go to law school, medical school, and graduate school. But, consistent with the pattern Goldin and Katz have documented, a considerable number of you are selecting finance and consulting. The Crimsons survey of last years

21、 class reported that 58 percent of men and 43 percent of women entering the workforce made this choice. Others believe they will best be able to do good by first doing well. Yet, you ask me why you are following this path.也许是为了高薪难以抵御的招聘诱

Why does this seemingly rational choice strike a number of you as not understandable, as not entirely rational, as in some sense less a free choice than a compulsion or necessity? Why does this seem to be troubli

The Meaning of Life capital M, capital L is a clich easier to deal with as the ironic title of a Monty Python movie or the subject

And you have already done remarkable things to fulfill them: your dedication to service demonstrated in your extracurricular engagements, your concern about the future of the planet expressed in your vigoro

Is it necessary to decide between remunerative work and meaningful work? If it were to be either/or, which would you choose? Is there a way to have both?但你们中的诸多人目前会问,

You are at a momen

37、t of transition that requires making choices. And selecting one option a job, a career, a graduate program means not selecting others. Every decision means loss as well as gain possibilities foregone as well as possibilities embraced. Your question to me is partly about that about loss of roads not

These are issues that in one way or another will at some point face you all as you graduate from medical school and choose a specialty family practice or dermatology, as you decide whether to use your law degree to work for a corporate firm or

40、as a public defender, as you decide whether to stay in teaching after your two years with TFA. You are worried because you want to have both a meaningful life and a successful one; you know you were educated to make a difference not just for yourself, for your own comfort and satisfaction, but for t

41、he world around you. You have flocked to courses like “Positive Psychology” Psych 1504 and “The Science of Happiness” in search of tip

43、s. But how do we find happiness? I can offer one encouraging answer: get older. Turns out that survey data show older people that is, my age report themselves happier than do younger ones. 45、cess so that it yields and encompasses real happiness, not just money and prestige. The most remunerative choice, you fear, may not be the most meaningful and the most satisfying. But you wonder how you would ever survive as an artist or an actor or a public servant or a high school teacher? How wou

46、ld you ever figure out a path by which to make your way in journalism? 49、of career choice, and I have been sharing it with students for decades. Dont park 20 blocks from your destination because you think youll never find a space. 53、your life to be and you are not sure the road you are taking is going to get you there. This is the best news. And it is also, I hope, to some degree, our fault. Noticing your life, reflecting upon it, considering how you can live it well, wondering how you can do good: These are perhaps the most va

54、luable things that a liberal arts education has equipped you to do. A liberal education demands that you live self-consciously. It prepares you to seek and define the meaning inherent in all you do. It has made you an analyst and critic of yourself, a person in this way supremely equipped to take ch

55、arge of your life and how it unfolds. It is in this sense that the liberal arts are liberal as in liberare to free. They empower you with the possibility of exercising agency, of discovering meaning, of making choices. The surest way to have a meaningful, happy life is to commit yourself to striving

56、 for it. Dont settle. Be prepared to change routes. Remember the impossible expectations we have of you, and even as you recognize they are impossible, remember how important they are as a lodestar guiding you toward something that matters to you and to the world. The meaning of your life is for you

59、 come back, from time to time, and let us know.我都等不及想看看你们都最后会如何。毕业后来和学校常联系,常回“家”看看,让我们理解你们的状况阿里巴巴总裁马云在毕业典礼上的发言谢谢周院长!谢谢海闻校长!各位领导、各位同窗、各位家长、各位亲朋好友: 今天真的恭喜人们、祝贺人们,但愿你们今天脸上的笑容可以继续洋溢二十年、三十年。你们是最幸运的,由于你们是在全球百年一遇的金融危机以来第一批北京大学的毕业生(笑)。 毕业的时候人们都非常兴奋,我毕业时候和人们想的也差不多:终于要毕业了,终于不需要吃学校食堂里很烂的饭菜。但是,这世界永远是这样布满了矛盾和遗憾。

60、当我再次回忆我自己毕业的那一天发生了什么事情时,发现毕业教师讲的话我都忘了,同窗说的感恩的话我也忘了,但是我却清清晰楚地记得,当我走出校门口,回过头再看了一眼我毕业的杭州师范学院时的情景。直到今天,我仍然觉得,那还是全世界最佳的大学,这也是我自己的信心来源之一。 在毕业时,还发生了一件事影响了我很近年,1988年我毕业的时候,我们校长对我说:“马云,你给我5年内不许跳槽,”那个时候,我们毕业时的工作室分派的,我被分到了一种学校里教书,我当时也回答她说“好,我不出来。”这是一种简朴的承诺,没想到坚守这个简朴的承诺这样艰难。 我毕业之后第一年的工资是每月89块,第一年89块,次年还是89块,到了第

61、三年,深圳那边有人请我,月工资1200块,这让我心里特别的斗争:要不要去深圳呢?一边是1200,一边是89,最后我觉得算了吧,这是一种承诺,自己将来肯定有机会,我还是守在学校里。到了第四年,海南改革开放,我的朋友全都到海南创业,今天海南养生堂的老板是我的朋友。那时有人给我3600块钱让我过去干,而我那时在学校里还是92块钱,但我仍然遵守自己的承诺在学校里待下去了。到了第六年,我觉得我已经完毕了我的承诺,于是我离开了学校。但是就是这短短的六年的学校里面的这个承诺让我变化了。今天人们常常问我,“马云,你为什么会去做阿里巴巴,由于你主线不懂技术,管理也不懂,财物也不懂,数学又那么烂,什么都那么烂,为

62、什么能做阿里巴巴?”其实很重要的是这六年的承诺。我相信在座所有的人,进北大之前,你给自己有个承诺,考进北大之后,给家人的承诺,朋友的承诺,一切的承诺,记住这些承诺,你第一天的承诺,今天毕业了,你还得回忆这些承诺。初恋是最美好的,因此不断地回忆它。 人们毕业了,拿到文凭,但生活才刚刚开始,我在公司里常常讲,大学里拿到文凭的时候,考试才刚刚开始,你们此前的四年也好,六年、八年的读书,你们此前的考试全是模拟,真正的考试在你们离开大学才开始。在生活中、工作中,你遇到的是每天的考试,而这些考试是实战的考试,你们今天披上的衣服,拿到的文凭,我告诉人们,这也许都是假的,真正的是从明天开始离开这个学校的时候,

63、你才进入考场,真正进入人生的考场、社会的考场。第二个建议给人们的是忘掉你所有学的知识,从明天开始。此前也有人到我们公司来应聘,我常常问她“你自己最强的是什么”,她们常常说,我最强的是这个,是那个。忘掉它,这怎么也许忘掉呢?如果你忘掉的,可以忘掉的东西一定不是你的,你忘不掉的才是你自己的东西。我是学英文专业的,我怎么忘也忘不掉的东西,那是我自己的。而我记不住那些sin、cos,那不是我的,忘掉就忘掉了。当我问你时,你别告诉我,书上是这样说,教师是这样说,我要问你怎么说,你怎么看。如果你没忘掉这些东西,这些永远是知识,我相信北大给人们的是文化,北大给人们的是学习的能力。 在社会上,特别是北大毕业的

64、同窗不要跟人家去比谁更聪颖,不要跟人家比能算,而是要比谁更能学习,更能欣赏别人。我刚刚讲,我特别欣赏,我自己尽管长的不好,但全世界长成我这样的人也很少,我觉得如果你毕业于名牌大学,请你用欣赏的眼光看看边上的人,如果你毕业于一种不是名牌的大学,深知考了三十年的大学,请用欣赏的眼光看看你自己,你只有给自己温暖,学会用自己的左手温暖自己的右手,你才干在社会的考堂中活下去,因此呢,后来你们学习的机会诸多,但我再给人们一种建议永远在你最忙的时候去学习。近来呢,经济不好,诸多公司把自己的高管送出去读书,我问她们为什么去读书,由于我们目前生意不好,空着也是空着,让她们读读书吧。尚有的呢觉得给她们一种福利,有

65、的人到我们公司好可怜,五年了,没工作,反正闲着,这样人永远读不好。我建议人们,我是把最忙的员工、最忙的干部,忙的简直是不懂得自己的人送出去读书,读书的时间一定是挤得出来的,最忙的人懂得自己想学什么,你在自己最忙的时候告诉自己要学习。 再给人们个建议呢,永远用自己的眼光去看世界,用自己的脑袋去思考这世界的问题,对我自己感触最大的是,我第一次出国是1985年,85年此前我历来没去过国外,那时候我受的教育是中国是全世界最富有的国家,我们需要去解放全人类。我第一次到了澳大利亚,才发现,天哪!需要人家来解放我们,我怎么所学的想法和知识主线不同样。直到今天为止,这世界诸多的机会,90%考虑那个人就是你永远要有独特的眼光去看待问题,别人说的,你思考一下,对还是不对,别人说对的事情,你想想万一不对呢,生活之中,有无是这样。人生是很精彩的,今天有人问我,你那时候就想到今天会这样吗?诸多人问我这个问题,你刚毕业的时候想过这个问题吗?我没想过,我连此前想到今天也没想过,5年此前想到今天阿里巴巴不会这样吗
