8、he country is renowned for its gastronomy (particularly wines and cheeses), history, culture and fashion. 2. Tourist attractions,The Eiffel Tower is an iron tower beside the River Seine in Paris. It is the tallest structure in Paris and among the most recognized symbols of France. Named after its de

9、signer, engineer Gustave Eiffel, it is a premier tourist destination.,Eiffel Tower,The tower stands 324 meters high. The total weight is 10100 tons. The number of steps to the summit has varied over the history of the tower, 1710 steps in 1889; 1920 steps in 1980s; 1665 steps today.,History: the str

10、ucture was built between 1887 and 1889 as the entrance arch for the worlds fair marking the centennial celebration of the French Revolution.,Story: the tower was met with resistance from the public when it was built, many calling it an eyesore. Maintenance of the tower includes applying about 50 ton

11、s of paint every 7 years to protect it from rust.,The Arc de Triomphe is a monument in Paris that stands at the western end of the Champs-lyses. The monument stands over 51 meters in height and is 45 meters wide.,The Arc de Triomphe,History: Commissioned in 1806 by Napoleon, shortly after his victor

12、y at Austerlitz, it was not finished until 1836. There are four huge relief sculptures at the bases of the four pillars. These commemorate The Triumph of 1810 ; Resistance , and Peace ; and The Departure of the Volunteers.,Engraved around the top of the Arch are the names of major victories won duri

13、ng the Revolutionary and Napoleonic periods. The names of less important victories, as well as those of 558 generals, are to found on the inside walls. Beneath the Arch is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and eternal flame commemorating the dead of the two world wars.,Here every Armistice Day the Pr

14、esident of the Republic lays a wreath. On 14 July - the French National Day, a military parade down the Champs Elyses begins here. For important occasions of state, and national holidays, a huge French tricolor is unfurled and hung from the vaulted ceiling inside of the Arch.,Champs Elysees,Champs E
